In 1321, under the reign of Pope John XXII, four barrels were brought from the papal cellar in Avignon to be filled with wine in Châteauneuf. Subsequently, the Popes increased their vineyard holdings in the region and the papal wine gained in fame. The Beaucastel family were living in Courthezon by the middle of the sixteenth century. In 1549 "Noble Pierre de Beaucastel" bought "a barn with its plot of land extending to 52 saumées at Coudoulet". Later, the manor house that we know today was built here and you can still see the arms of the Beaucastel family sculpted in stone in one of walls of the drawingroom. The Beaucastels were among the more notable families of this little town and in 1687 Pierre de Beaucastel, in recognition of his conversion to Catholicism after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes, was appointed "Capitaine de la ville de Courthezon" by Louis XIV. The letter from Louis XIV, also signed by Colbert, to Pierre de Beaucastel is still in our possession. Two centuries later at the time of the phylloxera, the owner of Beaucastel was Elie Dussaud, a companion of Ferdinand de Lesseps who built the Suez Canal. In 1909 Pierre Tramier bought the property and Beaucastel then passed to his son-in-law, Pierre Perrin, a scientist who considerably increased the vineyard holding. His efforts were continued by Jacques Perrin until 1978... Today the torch is carried by Jean Pierre and François, sons of Jacques. But Marc, Pierre, Thomas and Matthieu, who represent the fifth generation, are ready to pursue this fabulous family history. Read less

Tight and clean, smoky, mineral, floral, oleander, balanced, reticent, finesse, elegant tannins, lithe mouth feel, hinting at black cherry. This requires air. A hint of chocolate, lovely length. Smith Brothers black cherry cough drops. This lacks the explosiveness of previous bottles, perhaps it’s closed or the wine is past peak. Having had so many great experiences with this wine over the past few years, this is a let down. 90pts

Great intensity on the nose with a flush of floral notes followed by plums. dry cow patty, brilliant notes of bloody meat. Soft and richly mouthfilling in the mouth with a layered richness and unusual intensity of flavor centered around dried strawberry, with a subtle shading of dark chocolate and earthy spice. The only fault is the relative simplicity on the palate but this is a true crowd pleaser.

The nose was reticent yet refined with perfectly ripe blackberry, spice, and hints of wood and stems. It opened over time with sweeter fruit and hints of undergrowth. On the palate, it was beautifully balanced and smooth yet holding back at first. As it opened in the glass, flavors of finessed black fruits and medicinal herbal tea notes sweetened up the palate. The finish showed long spices and hints of remaining structure.

From .375- nose was very primary- all lightly roasted raspberries- the palate started off extremely disjointed and way out of balance, but after about an hour in the glass, everything came together into a real heavyweight CdP- almost painful to drink now, but incredible potential.

THIS IS A WINE TO SAVOR... This wine takes you on its journey, with each sip revealing new complexities. Take an hour to drink one glass (OK, a 200ml glass). The wealth of flavors this wine gives as it opens is to be enjoyed, not hurried.

Amazing nose initially with the promise of much more to come. Rich, leathery and earthy. However, its not one to open and leave for a few hours as it drops off quickly. Lovely, but pop the cork and go or it.

Medium-bodied but rather flavorful, with wonderful ripe fruit, showing pear, citrus, honey and quince in a fat package. A lemony finish keeps things fresh. Drink now through 2002. -PM Wine Spectator.
