After serving them tapas, some kind wine reps left me an generous half-bottle portion of this excellent Chateauneuf du Pape. The first nosing left my mouth watering! Ripe blackberry & cherry followed by musk, truffles, earthy minerals & a breath of fresh seabreeze. This rustic wine is one of the best bottlings of a Chateauneuf du Pape that I've encountered.

WA 95pts. - WS 95pts. - According to the Wine Advocate: As I stated last year, there is no Hommage a Jacques Perrin in 2006, but Beaucastel s 2006 Chateauneuf du Pape is performing even better from bottle than it did last year. Its dense plum/ruby/purple color is followed by a big, sweet perfume of black truffles, camphor, earth, incense, new saddle leather, and loads of peppery, blackberry, and herb-infused, meaty, black cherry fruit. Deep, full-bodied, and dense, with sweet tannin, this explosively rich Chateauneuf is a stronger effort than the 2005, 2004, or 2003. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2028. According to the Wine Spectator: Powerful, with a round, almost creamy core of blackberry and raspberry fruit all layered with cocoa, sweet toast, mesquite and fig paste. Long and rich through the finish. Still quite primal, with lots in reserve. Best from 2010 through 2030.

Full body, medium acid. Red fruits, cinnamon, ginger, leather. Soft, lush texture. Heavy wood and game notes. Complex. High tannins in the finish suggest some cellar time.
Dark ruby red. Full-bodied. Medium fruit. Moderately tannic. Black fruits, herbs, tobacco. Reasonably packed and solid, with some jammy character. Not as flattering, ripe or aromatically developed as one would expect. This might improve with some cellar age.
This rich red still shows the backward intensity of youth, with a dark color and initially reductive aromas. But be patient - behind the firm tannins there's a core of ripe, rich plum, with notes of game, herb and mineral that promise complexity with age. Best after 2000.
Deep ruby to the rim. Moderately full-bodied. Balanced acidity. Highly extracted. Mildly oaked. Mildly tannic. Black fruits, minerals. Full, fleshy aromas with a rounded personality. Firmly structured through the finish, with a deep core of black fruits. Approachable now, but this is built to age.
