Tight and clean, smoky, mineral, floral, oleander, balanced, reticent, finesse, elegant tannins, lithe mouth feel, hinting at black cherry. This requires air. A hint of chocolate, lovely length. Smith Brothers black cherry cough drops. This lacks the explosiveness of previous bottles, perhaps it’s closed or the wine is past peak. Having had so many great experiences with this wine over the past few years, this is a let down. 90pts

The nose was reticent yet refined with perfectly ripe blackberry, spice, and hints of wood and stems. It opened over time with sweeter fruit and hints of undergrowth. On the palate, it was beautifully balanced and smooth yet holding back at first. As it opened in the glass, flavors of finessed black fruits and medicinal herbal tea notes sweetened up the palate. The finish showed long spices and hints of remaining structure.

From .375- nose was very primary- all lightly roasted raspberries- the palate started off extremely disjointed and way out of balance, but after about an hour in the glass, everything came together into a real heavyweight CdP- almost painful to drink now, but incredible potential.

THIS IS A WINE TO SAVOR... This wine takes you on its journey, with each sip revealing new complexities. Take an hour to drink one glass (OK, a 200ml glass). The wealth of flavors this wine gives as it opens is to be enjoyed, not hurried.

The superb 1998 Chateauneuf du Pape is a classic blend of 30% Mourvedre, 30% Grenache, 10% Syrah, 10% Counoise, 5% Cinsault, with the balance other permitted grape varieties. The color is a dense sat... Robert Parker's Wine Advocate. A Proprietary Blend wine from Rhone in France. 1998 Beaucastel, Chateau Chateauneuf du Pape 750ml

Winemaker's Notes:

Dark ruby colour, with bright red tinges. Nose still a little closed before decanting, expressing quintessential fruit, macerated with spices. The mouth is round, ripe and fleshy, and the generous finish ends with fine and velvety tannins Great potential, but still a little closed Food matches: roast lamb, grilled beef on the bone, A perfect dish: Roast saddle of lamb with pink garlic, grilled eggplant and zucchini, wild herb pesto.
