What to Expect
The Grand Vin of the Southern Rhone Valley, Châteauneuf is perhaps the quintessential blended wine. With 13 varieties of grapes allowed, 15 if you included both the light and dark skinned varieties of Grenache and Picpoul, each winemaker has the ability to craft a unique and distinct interpretation of the soils and climates of the region. While few producers use all or even most of the 13 varieties, most rely on Grenache to form the heart and soul of their wines. These are rather big and distinctly warm climate wines that are rich with alcohol. The tannins of Grenache are modest, so many of these wines require little aging to be enjoyed; yet many can improve over the course of a decade. Typically one finds rich strawberry and red cherry tones in Châteauneuf with complicating notes of herbs and lavender, frequently referred to as "garrigue". There are frequently notes of game, leather and tar, typical of Syrah and Mourvedre - two other important components of many wines.
Winemakers Notes
The 30% Mourvèdre is evident in the generous colour and savoury nose of the2006; a big and powerful wine, withtar, liquorice and bonfire in supportof the dense black fruit, the sweetness of which is thus far enigmatically andsubtly shrouded. All will be revealed!<br/>Simon Field M.W. - Rhône Buyer

After serving them tapas, some kind wine reps left me an generous half-bottle portion of this excellent Chateauneuf du Pape. The first nosing left my mouth watering! Ripe blackberry & cherry followed by musk, truffles, earthy minerals & a breath of fresh seabreeze. This rustic wine is one of the best bottlings of a Chateauneuf du Pape that I've encountered.

Parker review: As I stated last year, there is no Hommage a Jacques Perrin in 2006, but
Beaucastel's 2006 Chateauneuf du Pape is performing even better from
bottle than it did last year. Its dense plum/ruby/purple color is followed by a
big, sweet perfume of black truffles, camphor, earth, incense, new saddle
leather, and loads of peppery, blackberry, and herb-infused, meaty, black
cherry fruit. Deep, full-bodied, and dense, with sweet tannin, this explosively
rich Chateauneuf is a stronger effort than the 2005, 2004, or 2003. Anticipated

WS review: Powerful, with a round, almost creamy core of blackberry and raspberry fruit
all layered with cocoa, sweet toast, mesquite and fig paste. Long and rich
through the finish. Still quite primal, with lots in reserve. Best from 2010
through 2030. 7,500 cases imported.
