Grape varieties
The thirteen grape varieties of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation with a strong percentage of Mourvèdre and Grenache (30% each), Syrah 10%, Counoise 10% Cinsault 5% and the rest divided up amongst the remaining grape varieties: Vaccarèse, Terret noir, Muscardin, Picpoul, Picardan, Bourboulenc, Roussanne.

The Grenache and the Cinsault give the wine its colour, intensity and softness. The Mourvèdre, Syrah, Muscardin and Vaccarèse give the wine its renowned ageing potential and dark, classic character. The Counoise, Picpoul and other varieties read more...

Rating: 93-96 - As reviewed by International Wine Cellar in Issue 130, January/February 2007 Deep ruby. Intense dark berry scents expand and deepen with air, picking up dusky espresso and licorice tones. Lush, powerful and sweet, with impressively concentrated, pure dark berry flavors and supple, finely integrated tannins. There's a great fruit/tannin balance here, and the supple finish boasts impressively concentrated and remarkably persistent cherry and blackberry fruit.

WS review: One of the largest estates in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation, thisproperty is owned and run by the Perrin family. In 2005, they produced theirbest regular cuvée since 1989 (Wine Spectator's Wine of the Yearin 1991). The Beaucastel vineyard produces dense and explosive wines from acollage of 13 different grapes, most notably Grenache and Mourvèdre.Each is fermented separately in concrete or wooden vats.
