What to Expect

The Grand Vin of the Southern Rhone Valley, Châteauneuf is perhaps the quintessential blended wine. With 13 varieties of grapes allowed, 15 if you included both the light and dark skinned varieties of Grenache and Picpoul, each winemaker has the ability to craft a unique and distinct interpretation of the soils and climates of the region. While few producers use all or even most of the 13 varieties, most rely on Grenache to form the heart and soul of their wines. These are rather big and distinctly warm climate wines that are rich with alcohol. The tannins of Grenache are modest, so many of these wines require little aging to be enjoyed; yet many can improve over the course of a decade. Typically one finds rich strawberry and red cherry tones in Châteauneuf with complicating notes of herbs and lavender, frequently referred to as "garrigue". There are frequently notes of game, leather and tar, typical of Syrah and Mourvedre - two other important components of many wines.

Winemakers Notes

A youthful, dense, concentrated wine which has a very expressive nose. It is filled with fruit of a ripe, cherry confit style, clean and pure, but with a rich, feral seam in the background, and a little furry toffee (if that makes sense!). This is really very, very enticing, and certainly holds a lot of promise. The palate is deliciously cool, rich and broad, quite deep, firmly acidic yet rounded and structured. It is very grippy and full of the promise suggested by the nose. Rich, delightfully extracted, well defined and very exciting. When stacked against 1998, 2001 and 2003, I think 2000 is an under-rated vintage.

IWC 93 (1/2003): Red-ruby. Roasted aromas of black fruits, leather, maple syrup and mocha. Initially a bit tight on the palate, but showed a lush, seamless texture as it opened in the glass, without losing its definition. Not quite as dense as the 2001 but very full in the mouth, with a higher-pH impression. Finishes very long, with the ripe tannins coating the front teeth.

From .375 this wine is pretty intense- there's a TON of oak here that is completely absorbed by the fruit, which is incredibly dense and rich. The nose started with a sulphur blast, followed by that sweet oak vanilla thing that I can't stand. Once that blew off, it was all black raspberry. The palate is almost overwhelming now- all texture and robust fruit. excellent with steak. Good now with some air, great in 10-15 years.

WS 90 (8/2003): Clean and fresh, bursting with fruit and spices. Full-bodied, it delivers some game, truffle, vanilla notes. It's distinctive and ought to reveal wonderful terroir with age, but for now it hasn't come together. Needs time. Drink now through 2020.

In the glass, this wine is a very dark red. Aromas of red fruits, leather, truffles and musk follow through to spices, pepper, and anise on the palate. From one of the most well known and respected producers in Southern France. The vineyard is planted in all the traditional grapes of Chateauneuf-du-Pape: Grenache, Mourvedre, Syrah, Cinsault, Vaccarese, Counoise, Terret Noir, Muscardin, Clairette, Picpoul, Picardin, Bourboulenc, and Roussanne. For their red wines, Mourvedre has the largest percentage (over 30%), followed by Grenache (30%), Counoise, Syrah, and Cinsault. All thirteen read more...

"...profoundly sweet perfume of melted licorice, blackberries, and black cherries backed up by loads of glycerin, full body, and moderately high but sweet, well-integrated tannin. There is a seamlessness to the 2000 that will make it accessible early in life, and thus atypical for Beaucastel...94." WA 2/03.
