What to Expect

The Grand Vin of the Southern Rhone Valley, Châteauneuf is perhaps the quintessential blended wine. With 13 varieties of grapes allowed, 15 if you included both the light and dark skinned varieties of Grenache and Picpoul, each winemaker has the ability to craft a unique and distinct interpretation of the soils and climates of the region. While few producers use all or even most of the 13 varieties, most rely on Grenache to form the heart and soul of their wines. These are rather big and distinctly warm climate wines that are rich with alcohol. The tannins of Grenache are modest, so many of these wines require little aging to be enjoyed; yet many can improve over the course of a decade. Typically one finds rich strawberry and red cherry tones in Châteauneuf with complicating notes of herbs and lavender, frequently referred to as "garrigue". There are frequently notes of game, leather and tar, typical of Syrah and Mourvedre - two other important components of many wines.

Winemakers Notes

Dark ruby colour, with bright red tinges.
Nose still a little closed before decanting, expressing quintessential fruit, macerated with spices.
The mouth is round, ripe and fleshy, and the generous finish ends with fine and velvety tannins
Great potential, but still a little closed

Food matches: roast lamb, grilled beef on the bone,
A perfect dish: Roast saddle of lamb with pink garlic, grilled eggplant and zucchini, wild herb pesto.

Reviews

From .375- nose was very primary- all lightly roasted raspberries- the palate started off extremely disjointed and way out of balance, but after about an hour in the glass, everything came together into a real heavyweight CdP- almost painful to drink now, but incredible potential.

Rating: 93/100 - As reviewed by International Wine Cellar in Issue 94, January/February 2001 Saturated ruby-red. Superripe but reticent, grenache-dominated aromas of roasted plum, cherry jam, tar and humus. Fat, lush and stuffed with fruit; almost heavy today compared to the '99. But this is utterly silky and its firm underlying structure is buried by fruit and baby fat. Intriguing meat and licorice notes. A wine of superb finesse and superfine tannins.

WS 94 (12/2000): Distinctive, very monolithic, clean, pure and crisp, with fresh fruit zipping along the palate. Turning a bit tough and tannic, it holds back a lot now, delivering little seduction, hiding well its leather, game, truffle and black fruit character, yet it's undeniably balanced. Made to age. Best from 2010 through 2030.
