What to Expect

The Grand Vin of the Southern Rhone Valley, Châteauneuf is perhaps the quintessential blended wine. With 13 varieties of grapes allowed, 15 if you included both the light and dark skinned varieties of Grenache and Picpoul, each winemaker has the ability to craft a unique and distinct interpretation of the soils and climates of the region. While few producers use all or even most of the 13 varieties, most rely on Grenache to form the heart and soul of their wines. These are rather big and distinctly warm climate wines that are rich with alcohol. The tannins of Grenache are modest, so many of these wines require little aging to be enjoyed; yet many can improve over the course of a decade. Typically one finds rich strawberry and red cherry tones in Châteauneuf with complicating notes of herbs and lavender, frequently referred to as "garrigue". There are frequently notes of game, leather and tar, typical of Syrah and Mourvedre - two other important components of many wines.

Wine Skinny

Bursting with black plum and berry fruit, with touches of earthy herbs and oak, this is completely drinkable now and should cellar well for another three or four years. In other words, not exactly a blockbuster C-d-P, but yummy nonetheless.

In the glass, this wine is a very dark red. Aromas of red fruits, leather, truffles and musk follow through to spices, pepper, and anise on the palate. From one of the most well known and respected producers in Southern France. The vineyard is planted in all the traditional grapes of Chateauneuf-du-Pape: Grenache, Mourvedre, Syrah, Cinsault, Vaccarese, Counoise, Terret Noir, Muscardin, Clairette, Picpoul, Picardin, Bourboulenc, and Roussanne. For their red wines, Mourvedre has the largest percentage (over 30%), followed by Grenache (30%), Counoise, Syrah, and Cinsault. All thirteen read more...

WS 88 (12/1999): A clever effort for '97. Dark and fruit-driven, this fresh, compacted Châteauneuf delivers blackberry, toasted oak, plum and game. The tannins are well integrated in the ways of modern winemaking. Drink now through 2005.

WA 89-91 (2/1999): Yields for the 1997 Chateauneuf du Pape were tiny, averaging 22 hectoliters per hectare, and the wine is one of the most seductive and forward young Beaucastels I have tasted since the 1985. The blend was 35% Mourvedre, 30% Grenache, 10% Counoise, 5% Syrah, 5% Cinsault, and the rest other southern Rhone varietals. The deep ruby color is accompanied by forward, attractive aromatics consisting of black raspberries, cherries, licorice, floral, and herb scents. The wine is fruit-driven, with less structure than usual, but luscious cassis, licorice, and blackberries inundate read more...
