What to Expect

Rhone Blends are generally based on Grenache, though some blends may be predominantly Syrah or Mourvedre. The fact that these wines are blends gives the winemakers unusual flexibility in creating a finished wine. In the Southern Rhone Valley of France the styles can range from light, fruity, soft Cotes du Rhone to big, bold, age worthy Chateaunuef-du-pape. This blend is also very popular in Australia and the United States where they frequently go by the Moniker GSM (Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre) and exhibit the rich, bold fruit that both countries are famous for.

Hoo-ha. This is still showing some tannins and grip around the edges, but in another year or so I imagine it will be perfectly integrated and even more luscious. Blackberry, briary garrigue notes, and that heady sweet smell characteristic of good Chateauneuf du Pape. Long spicy finish. Not filtered. 13% alch. Amazing value.

Softening a bit at this stage, with plush cherry, blackberry, and currant flavors and aromas, with a sense of glycerin in the midpalate and finish. Still excellent, and holding up very well.

Another great bottle. Drinking very gamy and leathery now, with firm blackberry underneath. Still a fantastic value wine.

Fading a bit now, with aromas of blackberry and flavors of blackberry and stone. Much less spice than in previous bottles, but still that intriguing gamey-garrigue note. Remains one of my favorite Languedoc wines of recent years.
