Château Cos d'Estournel St. Estephe 2017

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Perfumed on the nose with deep, layered notes of black currant, wood spice, herbs, sandalwood and Asian spice tones with floral top notes and a certain element that recalls perfectly ripe Cabernet Franc. This is a big wine, powerful yet fresh with slightly drying tannins. The intensity of the fruit quickly overwhelms the tannins and fills the mouth with ripe black raspberry fruit and notes of gunpowder and dark, moist soil. This clamps down a bit on the finish but all the elements are there for a tremendous bottle of wine to emerge in 12-15 years, perhaps more. It’s really massive and packed by all those tannins will take time and these are not the elegant tannins of 2000 or 2001. 94pts

Chateau Cos d'Estournel:
Born in 1762 during the reign of Louis XV and died in 1853 under Napoleon III, at the remarkable age of 91, Louis Gaspard d'Estournel had one sole passion: Cos. Having inherited a few vines near the village of Cos, he recognized, in 1811, the quality of their wine and decided to vinify them separately.

Very fruit driven aromas greet the nose, very new worldish on the nose with scents of black fruit, black spiced, and green herb tones that are quite intense. On the palate this combines huge ripe fruits with a certain greenness to the tannins. The fruit is not enough to mask the slight bitter edge of the tannins but is rich and full of liquory cassis and blackberry notes. This is a touch weighty and chewy with a rustic edge coming from the tannins but it’s rather matte in the mouth and lacks some freshness. It turns savory on the backend and into the finish, which is marred by the bitterness of the tannins once again. A wine of contradictions 88pts

A bit of woody sweetness greets the nose with woodspice notes well integrated into the core of fresh black currants, dried chilies, and a hint of crushed flowers. The aromas here are amazingly well defined. Explosive freshness greets the palate with those silky tannins giving this good breadth but the height in the mouth is profound. It still has a hint of buttered herbs but the core of bitter cherry and black currant fruit powers thought e mid-palate leaving the backend saturated in slightly minty crème de cassis tones with hints of juniper and spice on the long finish. The integration here already is quite remarkable and the tension the wine retains is profound. A great bottle of Bordeaux in the making. 96pts

The nose is still marked by oak with a dark, spicy, white pepper dusted veil over the candied blackberry fruits. With time this reveals deep inky notes with hints of leather and tea. This reminds me of the 1990. In the mouth this has tons of ripe tannins and bright acids in balance and offering a combination of power and finesse. The fruit on the mid-palate is dark and rich but gives the impression of lightness ending with a red currant rush on the tobacco, clay and green peppercorn scented finish. Really polished tannins here are plentiful but barely noticeable in many ways. 92pts

This is very aromatic with powerful aromas of cassis, clay and smoke backed up with herbaceous and subtly peppery tones. This is already silky in the mouth though there is real power here waiting to be sprung. The fruit is fresh and bright with excellent purity and good inner-mouth energy in a cool register with a fine balance between the ripe fruit and mineral/clay tones. This is pretty big but retains a certain finesse about it. 92pts

Opens very green and leafy with obvious oak and a strong note of toasted sprouts and pencil lead. Medium bodied and very soft, silky soft with more than a passing resemblance to a mini 85 with it's upfront sweetness and seamless texture though less of the layered aspect that makes that wine appealing. This never wowed but has improved though the best aspect would be the gentle texture. 2007-2013

Lovley nose opens with cool layers of pencil lead, burnt marshmallow, leafy herbs and coffee bean with a gentle plummy note and an edge of roast meat. Opens to reveal lots of bell pepper which I usually don't like to much but this is balanced, fresh , and attractive with more of a smoked green chili savoriness to it as opposed to a really vegetal aspect. Rich and perfectly balanced in the mouth with rich blackberry fruit balanced by dark, minerally earth that carries through to the long, firm finish. Classy bottle, very presice with excellent focus and cut and the perfectly ripe fruit really gives this an elegant softness that is appealing. 2007-2020

Loads of wild mushroom on the nose. Earthy and loamy. Rich bold florals and fruit. Still very closed, yet lush on the palate. Very floral with an acidic tang to it. Definitely needs more time. - Blind tasted 9/15/10

Lots of minerality and a barnyard scent on the nose. Firm acids and a real meatiness. Interesting, but fairly funky overall

Maybe 4.4+ stars. Color, this wine has a nice dark ruby red color. Nose, leather, orang peel (just a little), black fruits, blackberry, currant, some floral aromas coming through, licorice, some earthiness. Midpalate, nice black fruits, licorice, some dark chocolate, voluptuous, dry, young, full bodied, has a nice weight. Finish, very silky, elegant, smooth, nice complexity, well balanced, a little hint of bitterness (in a good way), lingering (45+ seconds and still feeling it), dark chocolate and black fruits are dancing on my palate, nice firm smooth tannins. Overall, this wine is very well made. It is a very modern still of Bordeaux. It has not peaked yet. I would put it away until 2026-2038. I am 95 on this effort. I am enjoying it very much. I would indeed recommend it to any wine lover who appreciates quality. Happy drinking!

Massive, massive wine-- strong tannins, cedar box, smoky ethereal quality, good dark fruit flavors. This bottle will be worth at least double its retail value when it peaks.

Full, bright ruby. Superripe but vibrant nose offers liqueur-like cassis, graphite, mocha and exotic oak scents; smells thick! Then plush, dense, large-scaled and seamless, offering extraordinary breadth and a 3-D texture to its dark fruit, graphite and mineral flavors. This very modern style of Cos finishes with outstanding, building, palate-saturating persistence and utterly sweet tannins.

This is a complex and rich wine dominated by superripe fruit. It is a wine of extremes, of fruit, of dark tannins allied to some bitterness from the black chocolate extract. Ripe plums and sweet black fruits are given a lift at the end with bright acidity.

One of the most celebrated wines of Bordeaux if not the world, Chateau Cos D'Estournel is a Classified Second Growth Bordeaux that often rivals or exceeds First Growths. And from the tremendous 2010 vintage this wine is one for the ages, a blend of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. Receiving numerous rave reviews, Robert Parker scored this 2010 Cos 97+ saying "The 2010 is a more structured, restrained, less flamboyant version of the 2009. A final blend of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot that hit 14.5% natural alcohol, this wine (which represents only 55% of the estate's production) is full-bodied, classic and built along the lines of the 2000 (although that wine was made before Reybier acquired the estate and upgraded quality significantly). This wine exhibits beautifully pure notes of creme de cassis, blueberry liqueur, pen ink, graphite and hints of toast and vanillin. The wine is full and rich, and although aged in 80% new oak, the wood is a subtle background component. This beauty will take longer to round into shape than the dramatic and compelling 2009. Forget it for 5-8 years, and drink it over the following three-plus decades."
