Château Cos d'Estournel Red Bordeaux Blend St. Estèphe 1985
The vintage displays a deep ruby color and intense aromas of mocha and licorice. It has great density and length and is considered a classic Cos dEstournel. Have fashioned an exceptional wine displaying a dense ruby/purple color as well as a sweet perfume of boysenberries, black currants, cherries, pain grille, roasted herbs, and licorice. Medium-bodied with impressive density for the vintage, sweet tannin, and outstanding richness and length

Born in 1762 during the reign of Louis XV and died in 1853 under Napoleon III, at the remarkable age of 91, Louis Gaspard d'Estournel had one sole passion: Cos. Having inherited a few vines near the village of Cos, he recognized, in 1811, the quality of their wine and decided to vinify them separately.
Editorial Reviews for Château Cos d'Estournel Red Bordeaux Blend St. Estèphe
This opens very herbaceously with a gentle touch of cotton candy, a bit of peppery spice and subtle oak. In the mouth it offers up a gently aged sweetness balanced by good acidity with no tannin to speak of. The midpalate is a touch diffuse at first but this ultimately grows on you with it's layered delicacy and gentle nature. At peak or maybe in gentle decline. 2007-2011
This offers up notes of bottle sweetness with black soil flecked fruit that recalls dried tomatoes, tarragon, a touch of menthol, and tons of herbaceous notes. In the mouth the tannins are pretty much resolved and the wine is relying on its bright acids for support. There is plenty of ripe, black currant fruit edged with mineral and menthol tones that lead to a subtle, sweetly fruited finish with lingering herb and dried grass notes. Getting to the end but certain to fade away instead of falling off a cliff. Drink these sooner rather than later. 91pts
Anise, leather; firm, energetic, cherry, youngish, prominent tannin. MoCOOL tasting, Dexter, MI 8.16.2008.

The 1985 from cask could have been a lighter version of the 1982 and 1953 vintages. Forward, with a fabulously scented bouquet of pain grille and concentrated red and black fruits (especially black cherries), it is rich, lush, long, and medium to full-bodied. Very fragrant, with gobs of sweet black fruits, minerals, and spice in both its flavors and aromatics, this is one of the most forward wines from Cos.
Dark, rich and deeply concentrated. California-like, with its opulent coffee, herb, cedar, currant, coffee, mineral and spice flavors. Reaching a nice drinking plateau, but has substance, depth and a long, full finish.--Cabernet Challenge. (JL) Wine Spectator. A Bordeaux Blend wine from Bordeaux in France. 1985 Cos d'Estournel 750ml
