Chateau Clement-Pichon Haut-Medoc 1999

Member Review by duncan 906:

I bought this bottle of wine for £12 from a wine merchant in Sussex.Haut-Medoc is a large AOC set up in 1936 for wines produced in 15 communes on the eastern side of the Medoc peninsular stretching nearly 40 miles north of the city of Bordeaux. It is an 'umbrella ' AOC because it includes several smaller but more prestigious appellations such as Margaux and Pauillac.Winemaking really got started here at the end of the 17th century when Dutch engineers drained the salt marshes and it now includes some of the world's greatest wine estates.Chateau Clement-Pichon is a 25 hectare cru bougeois estate owned by Clement Fayat. My bottle consists of 62% merlot,33% cabernet sauvignon and 5% cabernet franc and was aged in oak barrels. I started the bottle last night with my supper of roast pork and I really enjoyed it.It is positively bursting with a blackcurrant, plum, cherry and bramble style fruit and the tannins are soft but give some good structure. In short, this is a lovely wine

Château Clement-Pichon:
The history of the chateau dates back to the 14th century and it was owned by the Pichon family for well over 200 years but the actual building was rebuilt after a fire in 1881.The place was bought by Clement Fayat [who also owns Chateau Fayat in Pomerol and Chateau Dominique in Saint Emilion ] in 1976 and he renamed it Chateau Clement-Pichon and replanted the 25 hectare vineyard. It has cru bourgeois status
