Château Chasse Spleen Moulis 2017

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Moderately apparent oak greets the nose which is a bit sweet and nutty. Lean and a bit high in acid on entry, then this fleshes out in the mouth with soft tannins and fairly plump fruit. It's a bit on the simple and soft side. 84pts

Nicely aromatic with soil, tobacco, black currant and subtle smoky dried chile tones – full and smooth in the mouth, rather rich with black fruit, full ripe tannins, integrated acids, a touch of mineral, mint and a touch of wood on the moderately long finish (89-90)

This is relatively open with a nose of subtle toasty oak, crushed vitamin minerality, red fruits and a floral top note. With air this becomes sweetly jammy with a savory overlay of vanilla, olive, roast meat, and gravel. Medium bodied and just a touch rigid at first this remains focused with lots of soft tannins adding a chewiness and good purity of slightly jammy cassis fruit filling the midpalate. The finish is moderately tannic with subtle leather and herb notes contributing a slight rusticity to the package but it is satisfyingly complex and muscularly sinewy.

This little wine from that island in Medoc known as Moulis almost never disappoints a discerning taste and the 2009 is better than ever, a deep coagulated blood red colour with a nose dominated by brambleberry, wine-dipped cigar and cedar. Entry is heavy with sunken tannin, deep cassis flavours and a rich, long, satisfying finish. Although it will last through to the end of the decade, the wine is great now. Value. 90 points.

Härdöpfuschtock in der Nase. Wunderbar nach roten Beeren, typisch Bordeaux. Super Preis-/Genussverhältnis. Überzeugt!

Tasted at the Cru Bourgeois primeur tasting. This has a lovely ripe blackberry, cassis and vanillary nose with beautifully integrated new oak. Seamless. The palate is medium-bodied with a rich, liquorice tinged entry, sappy dark berries, a touch of s... Neal Martins Wine Journal. Did Lord Byron give this name to the château, swearing that there was nothing like it for ôchasser le spleenö (getting rid of the blues)? Or was it Charles Baudelaire, who is said to have come to Moulis in the 1860s because the artist Odilon Redon, who illustrated Les Fleurs du Mal, lived near the estate? Not included in the 1855 Classification, the château was listed as a Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel in 1932, and confirmed in 2003 in recognition of its excellent quality. Bernadette Villars took over managing the estate in 1976, followed by her elder daughter, Claire, from 1992 to 1999, and her younger daughter, Céline, since 2000. Chasse-Spleen is an extraordinary wine, it is a shining example of the best its appellation can produce. The wine is deep in colour and has a concentrated, powerful bouquet. It is full-bodied on the palate, with a strong personality. An eminently attractive wine

This 1996 French red wine is very representative of this much praised Medoc vintage. It has both richness of tannins and great structure.
