What to Expect

Arguably the most renowned wines on earth, the classed growths of Bordeaux continue to epitomize the power and complexity Bordeaux blends are capable of. While most wines here are based on Cabernet Sauvignon, both Merlot and Cabernet Franc play important roles in adding layered complexity to the finished wines, and allow winemakers in each commune within the region to use the blend that is best suited to their unique combination of soil and meso-climate. The most famous communes each have their own classic traits with St. Estephe giving full, if rustic wines, from the heavy clay soils, to Paulliac's elegant balance of ripe fruits, minerality and structure to St. Julien's rich blackberry core and supple feel. Moving to the South of the region brings one to Margaux, with its notes of flowers and berries draped over a feminine frame, and then to the Graves region with wines redolent of tobacco, gravel and smoke. To the East lies the famous appellations of St. Emillion, with its wonderfully ripe Cabernet Franc, and Pomerol where Merlot rules the roost and produces deep, plush wines of uncommon refinement.

Winemakers Notes

The immense class is clear to see. The silky, incredibly concentrated andelegant brambly fruit is wonderfully fragrant with lovely minerality and hintsof cedar. The super-ripe tannins are accompanied by layers and layers of fruitalongside a freshness and firm acidity. This is like a sleeping giant with manyof its glorious elements hiding from view, like hidden treasure. Even so it isutterly compelling, with each taste a PhD of Claret. Drink 2020-2050. BBRScore: 20/20. Wine Spectator: 95-100/100.

Delivers blackberry, dried porcini, tobacco and licorice aromas. Full-bodied, with layers of velvety tannins and loads of dark chocolate, cigar box, currant, berry and mineral. The finish is long, with a coffee, almost meaty, aftertaste. Very beautiful and balanced. Best after 2013. -Wine Spectator Made in an ethereal style, the 2005 Lafite is composed of nearly 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, just under 11% Merlot, and a tiny fraction of Petit Verdot (representing only 40% of the total harvest). Bright medium ruby. Very pure aromas of cassis, minerals, violet and licorice. Juicy, elegant and precise, with lovely acidity framing the dark fruit and mineral flavors. On the austere side but with excellent verve and cut. Very long for this wine. -International Wine Cellar 89-91
