Château Carbonnieux Pessac-Léognan White 2015

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

A fair amount of sulfur quickly blows off and reveals well integrated oak on the nose but that can't conceal the deep plummy fruit and black mineral notes on this fairly effusive nose. There are some nice notes of shaved Belgian chocolate, ash, oily green herbs and ripe vegetal tones adding complexity. This has some blazing acidity right up front which is joined by lots of polished tannins. The structure really frames the black currant, black plum, and balsamic notes and keep the wine focused and nicely tense through the long, bright red currant finish. With substantial depth of fruit and fine balance this has a long life to look forward to though if one were to pik nits it does carry a bit too much alcohol which becomes apparent on the backend. 2013-2025 92pts.

Chateau Carbonnieux is located just a few miles from Bordeaux. This beautiful castle overlooks one of the largest vineyards in the Graves region. The Estate's seven centuries of history have often been quite dramatic. Carbonnieux is one of the leading Graves Chateaux that justified the creation of the Prestigious Pessac-Léognan appellation. This property is one of the oldest in Graves. The original château was constructed around 1380 during the "Hundred Years War" and consequently its architecture is drawn along castellated lines. It initially belonged to the Bordeaux Hospices, thereafter the Ferron family and then the Councillors at the Parliament of Guyenne from 1519 until 1741. Named after Ramon Carbonnieux in 1234, the Château and vineyards were purchased in 1740 by Benedictines who started bottling wine at the Château. The Benedictines were ousted by the Revolution and the property changed hands several times between 1790 and 1956 when it was acquired by Marc Perrin, father of the current owner. A member of a family of wine growers of Burgundian origin, the Perrin's had been producing wines in Algeria for the last four generations. Marc Perrin and his son Antony improved the vineyards, restored the Château and modernized all of the working areas. Château Carbonnieux produces as much white wine as it does red. Chateau Carbonnieux, Graves, BordeauxChateau Carbonnieux It is true to say that Carbonnieux has a microclimate that is extremely conducive to winegrowing. This is due to the estate's position on a rise, the effect of the nearby Garonne river and Eau Blanche stream, and the excellent quality of the gravely soil. Furthermore, the proximity of Bordeaux has the effect of increasing the temperature by an average of 2° or 3° in winter. The estate includes 45-hectares of red grape varieties and 43-hectares of white, located on deep gravel slopes in close proximity to the Garonne River and Eau Blanche stream. Long famous for its white wine, Carbonnieux has been in the unusual position of producing both Red and White Graves for several centuries. The grand vin is Chateau Carbonnieux - red or white - although many would regard the white (20000 cases) as the more significant cuvée. Quality has remained in the ascendant in recent vintages. The red (25000 cases) does not challenge for top wine of the appellation, but it is well made if somewhat rustic, usually appropriately priced, and again quality has been on the up. The second wine is La Tour Léognan. Read less

This intriguing, not-so-cheap Graves white from the somewhat unheralded 2011 vintage offers a nose of herbal tea - tisane with chamomile and lemon peel, perhaps, with a hint of spearmint. Very inviting. The entry is presents a pleasant hedonic hit as well with peach, sweet lemon and pear. There is some tartness, but mostly balanced, elegant and tasty. Medium finish; could have just a tad more depth (core). 90 points.

Enjoyed this 2009 white Bordeaux blend at the suggestion of Per Se's head sommelier Michel Couvreux. Fantastic, structured, complex white, yet clean and not cloying. Good mineral base, with notes of citrus and white chocolate. Plays well with various courses.

I don't normally go for white wine, but this was a solid blend of fruit, oak, and acidity and very drinkable.

Sweet flowers and savory fruit flavors mix to make a complex wine that's pleasing and delicious. Full of melon and grapefruit and white grape. Great!

I really enjoyed this one, had a little kick to it. aroma of distinct yellow plum combined with a little grassy notes, nice complexity on the palate, get a little oak so I noticed that the wine was barrel fermented and barrel aged. definitely recommend this wine!

This is a classic white bordeaux, with tropical fruits and citrus. Very well-rounded.

Beautiful nose redolent of stone fruit and some pineapple. Deliciously crisp with great acidity and just enough oak balances out this very easy to drink white Bordeaux. May I please have another?

Very herbaceous in character, this is a wine that is packed with powerful acidity yet remains elegant in style. It has minerality and tight acidity, and should benefit from aging. - R.V. Wine Enthusiast. A Bordeaux Blanc wine from Bordeaux in France. 2011 Carbonnieux Blanc 1500ml
