Chateau Cantemerle Haut-Medoc France Bordeaux 1997

Member Review by duncan 906:

I bought this bottle of wine for £20 from the website www.bidforwine.co.uk/auctions/show/134568. Haut Medoc is an appellation set up in 1936 for red wines produced in 15 communes on the eastern side of the Medoc peninsular strtching nearly 40 miles north of the City of Bordeaux itself. My bottle comes from the large 5th growth estate of Chateau Cantemerle. It consists of 60% cabernet sauvignon,30% merlot,6% cabernet franc and 4% petit verdot and spent 12 months in oak barrels 50% of which were new. I started my bottle last night with my roast chicken supper. It is a full bodied and well structured wine. There is some very concentrated blackcurrant and licorice style fruit with ahint of smoke or cigar box and some soft and smooth tannins. In short this is a lovely wine that would pair with many foods

The estate and viticulture here has a history going back to the medieval era and it was owned by the Villeneuve family for 300 years until the Dubos family bought it in 1892. In the1855 classification it was not on the original list of classed growths in April, but after intensive lobbying by owner Caroline Villeneuve-Durfort it was added in the September, the only alteration to the list until the 1973 promotion of Chateau Mouton Rothschild from 2nd growth to first. The classification was based on information about wine prices provided by Bordeaux merchants but Caroline Villeneuve-Durfort was selling her wine to a Dutch merchant. The estate is now owned by the SMA insurance group who have invested heavily. There are 90 hectares under vine. There is a second wine called 'Les Alles de Cantemerle' Read less
