Chateau Cantemerle Haut Medoc 2010
The 2010 vintage brought out all the best in Cantemerle’s terroir. A deep color sets the tone for this wine: complex, concentrated and long in the mouth, with a finish which just doesn’t finish, leaving an impression of great aromatic richness. The wine’s dense structure is masterfully controlled, showing elegance without heaviness, and a liveliness highlighting its freshness. Swirling brings the wine alive in the glass, with aromas of spice, tobacco, black currant and plums. This is Cantemerle’s natural character, with the added richness a great vintage brings.

60% cabernet sauvignon 30% merlot 6% cabernet franc 4% petit verdot. Aged in 40% new barrels for 12 - 14 months. 90 hectares planted to sand and deep gravel from the Quaternary period. Sweet blackberry and mocha spice dominate the nose with underlying crushed rocks. Powerful black fruit matches the broad-shouldered tannins in this medium-to-full-bodied wine with medium-to-high acidity and the earthy terroir expression of pulverized rocks adds complexity to an accessible fruit forward wine.
Good full ruby-red. Musky aromas of black cherry blueberry espresso menthol and licorice lifted by a cool floral element. Densely packed and savory displaying sappy energy to its intense dark berry flavors. With a serious structure and no easy sweetness today this vibrant wine will need a good five to seven years in the cellar and should last well. A wine with blueberry and mineral aromas follows through to a full body, with fine tannins and a juicy finish. Best for years from here. Needs at least three years of bottle age to soften. Could be better than 2009 in the long run.
60% cabernet sauvignon 30% merlot and 5% each of cabernet franc and petit verdot.Aged in 50% new French oak for twelve months. A deep garnet core leads to a faint pink rim. Gentle currant and macerated cherry aromas follow through to entry the new oak is almost invisible in this cuvee. Cantemerle s 2010 is all about elegance and grace a tough trick to pull off in this dry vintage. This should be at the top of the list for those who prefer a more restrained Bordeaux. After belonging to the Villeneuve (1576- 1892) and Dubos (1892- 1980) families, Château Cantemerle was acquired by a major mutual insurance company, the SMABTP (Les Mutuelles d'Assurance du Bâtiment et des Travaux Publics), in 1981. The winemaking facilities were completely renovated and Cantemerle now enjoys a privileged position among the classified growths in the Haut-Médoc appellation. Human know-how makes the most of the estate's considerable natural blessings. The grapes are handpicked and carefully sorted. Small lots from individual vineyard plots are fermented separately in wide, low, wooden vats for the slow, gentle extraction of tannin.The wine is then aged in oak barrels for twelve months and lightly fined before château bottling.
