Chateau Cantemerle Haut-Médoc 2006

Winemaker's Notes:

Probably one of the most beautiful Cantermerles of the decade, showing great potential. This is a powerful wine with an almost black color, and still developing great aromatic complexity. Its opulence entirely covers the palate, with a clean and lively finish full of freshness. Be sure to decant it two hours before serving but better yet, wait until 2012 and accompany it with roast beef and wild mushrooms.

The estate and viticulture here has a history going back to the medieval era and it was owned by the Villeneuve family for 300 years until the Dubos family bought it in 1892. In the1855 classification it was not on the original list of classed growths in April, but after intensive lobbying by owner Caroline Villeneuve-Durfort it was added in the September, the only alteration to the list until the 1973 promotion of Chateau Mouton Rothschild from 2nd growth to first. The classification was based on information about wine prices provided by Bordeaux merchants but Caroline Villeneuve-Durfort was selling her wine to a Dutch merchant. The estate is now owned by the SMA insurance group who have invested heavily. There are 90 hectares under vine. There is a second wine called 'Les Alles de Cantemerle' Read less

This 2006 is a very fine wine, but has been marred by too much oak; an earlier tasting showed that at least 10 years was required to tame this excess. Today ( Feb 2017) the wine is far more refined, the dry, cedar bark and blackberry nose and entry is smoother, but still quite tannic; there is a lot of oak. A tasty wine without doubt, but producers need to remember that the fruit of 2006 is not up to the wood. Stil, with a slab of beefsteak this will do nicely. 89.

A little astringent yet but very. Doses of red berry fruits, blackberry and violets on the nose that follow to the palate well. Additional spice, earth and framing tannins balanced with good acidity leave leaves wanting more. Still has 3-5 years left. Drink or hold - 91 points - Paul
