What to Expect

Arguably the most renowned wines on earth, the classed growths of Bordeaux continue to epitomize the power and complexity Bordeaux blends are capable of. While most wines here are based on Cabernet Sauvignon, both Merlot and Cabernet Franc play important roles in adding layered complexity to the finished wines, and allow winemakers in each commune within the region to use the blend that is best suited to their unique combination of soil and meso-climate. The most famous communes each have their own classic traits with St. Estephe giving full, if rustic wines, from the heavy clay soils, to Paulliac's elegant balance of ripe fruits, minerality and structure to St. Julien's rich blackberry core and supple feel. Moving to the South of the region brings one to Margaux, with its notes of flowers and berries draped over a feminine frame, and then to the Graves region with wines redolent of tobacco, gravel and smoke. To the East lies the famous appellations of St. Emillion, with its wonderfully ripe Cabernet Franc, and Pomerol where Merlot rules the roost and produces deep, plush wines of uncommon refinement.

Winemakers Notes

"2000 Calon Ségur rivals the estate's finest wines of the last twodeacdes, the 1995, 1988 and 1982. ....This blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30%Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc exhibits a plum/purple colour along with gorgeousaromas of creosote intermixed with spring flowers, black cherries, cassis, licorice and stony, liquid minerals. A powerful, tannic, full-bodied and opulentwine, it possesses considerable structure that is reasonably well-concealed byconsiderale glycerin and intensity. Look for it to be at its best between2012-2040. Patience, patience, patience!." read more...

Reviews

Decanted for several hours, and tasted bits along the way. Did not start to show its true character until around hour 6. Truly fantastic wine - heavy, primal nose. Fig and cassis on the palate, balanced by lovely minerals and very firm tannins. Beware, until several hours of decanting, all you will get is tannins. This is one to cellar away and savor over the years.

IWC 90+ (6/2003): Full red-ruby. Musky aromas of tart red berries, smoke and meat, with a light medicinal nuance. Suave on entry, then rather tightly wound, even a bit youthfully dry. Fairly rich wine, but the redcurrant, smoke and spice flavors are presently dominated by solid underlying structure. Finishes firmly tannic, with sneaky persistence.

WS 93 (3/2003): Lovely berry, spice and leather aromas follow through to a medium- to full-bodied palate, with firm and silky tannins and a long, caressing finish. A harmonious wine. Not quite what it was from barrel, but outstanding all the same. Racy Calon. Best after 2010.
