Deep ruby. An expressive bouquet evokes dark berries, cherry compote and spice cake, with subtle minerality. Juicy, somewhat jammy blackberry and cherry flavors blend density and energy, with good mineral spine. Fresh and sweet on the finish, which repeats the spicy notes. This looks like it will drink well young.

The 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape (which claims as a consultant the excellent oenologist Xavier Vignon) is a blend of 65% Grenache, 15% Syrah, 12% Mourvedre and the rest Cinsault, aged in a combination of foudres and small oak barrels. It is an impressive dark ruby/plum color, and is front-end loaded with black cherry and black currant fruit as well as hints of licorice, pepper, and spice box. A touch of toasty oak suggests some new wood barrels, but that is largely submerged beneath a cascade of rich, full-bodied, opulent fruit. With an enticing texture and some structure, this wine should be at its best in 2–3 years and drink well for 12–15.

Chateau Cabrieres is notorious for producing some of the best reasonably-priced Chandacirc;teauneuf-du-Papes that we carry, so naturally I was really excited to see that they produce a Candocirc;tes du Rhandocirc;ne under $20 as well. I tried this rich, earthy Grenache/Syrah blend while in France, and was incredibly impressed with the depth and complexity offered. Deep, hedonistic black fruit is met with organic (earth, mushroom and rare meat) flavors and just enough smoke/spice to give perfect balance. This is a steal at this price! Try it with anything off the grill, or a braised meat and vegetable dish.

Silky and perfumy up front, with warm cherry pie, linzer torte and red licorice flavors, this soon turns dark and more reticent, with grippy charcoal, blackberry and plum skin notes taking over on the finish. Shows plenty of stuffing. Just needs a little time to round into form. Best from 2013 through 2020.

Oxidized aromas of stewed fruit, raisin, fruitcake, spice, dark olive, black currant and cherry. Round and compact with good intensity of flavor and a firm tannic grip to the finish which adds to the length. Drink: 2015.
