Château Boyd-Cantenac Margaux 2017

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

This is just classic Bordeaux. Big and deep on the nose with classic cassis, deep earthy tones and well integrated spice tones from the wood ageing all in harmony. In the mouth there are tons of fuzzy fruit tannins and good acidity supporting a mass of plush ripe fruit. This may lack a touch of Margaux typicity, though that may come with time, but the cassis and wild black raspberry fruit is complemented by lovely notes of earth and mineral with an animale note on the back end that keeps this just a touch sauvage. A bit of refreshing acidity pokes out on the finish which is long and very pure with a touch of wood spice return on the finale. Compelling bordeaux and at great value in this vintage. Bordeaux as it used to be! This should live a long and storied life. 2013-2030 95pts

Created 1754 by Jacques Boyd, of Irish origin, the estate was purchased by John Lewis BROWN in 1806, who was related to the Boyd family by marriage. Since the wines from Boyd-Cantenac had been recognised and traded for a century, in 1855 the Château was classified Third Growth, in the Grand Cru classification of the Bordeaux wines. The estate belonged to the Ginestet family, once owner of Chateu Margaux, before coming to the current owners in the early 1930s. After the economic crisis which greatly affected the vineyards after the first world war, Pierre Guillemet brought Botd-Cantenac back to life in the sixties. Since, its wines regularly bring their contribution to the Art of Living and to the expression of the terroir of Margaux. Not following changing and short-lived fashions, Boyd-Catntenac remains true to the style of traditional Margaux wines. Read less

One of the best Margauxs of the 05 vintage for early consumption, in addition to keeping locked up in the cellar for decades. Loads of dark, smokey fruit. Good acidity and tannins that are solid, yet seductive, a long finish and a very memorable wine. Most of the bottles I bought, I already consumed, because it's just that good ! One of the best values in Bordeaux, as this is a very serious wine.

2010: An opaque blue/purple color is accompanied by impressively sweet floral notes intermixed with black currant and blackberry fruit. Medium to full-bodied with high but round tannins the 2010 Boyd-Cantenac is exceptionally well-endowed textured and pure. This under-the-radar estate (a classified growth in the famous 1855 rankings) never seems to catch the attention of consumers. It deserves better. Enjoy the 2010 for 25 or more years. Aromas of minerals currants and berries follow through to a full body with juicy fruit and a long finish. Lovely depth of fruit and mouthfeel to this. Top Boyd for a long time. Better in 2017. James Suckling.

Very dark crimson. Fresh zesty and meaty with great energy. Though not as dense as many of its peers with pretty marked acidity. Pretty but just a bit green on the finish. Jancis Robinson.
