Château Beychevelle St.-Julien Pre-Arrival 2011

Winemaker's Notes:

"This has good ripe plum and black cherry fruit woven with a currant eau-de-vie aroma. There's fine-grained structure and an easy, vanilla-tinged finish...88-91" WS 04/12 "Plenty of blueberry and currant character with soft and velvety tannins and a pretty balance of fruit, alcohol and bright acidity. Nicely done...90-91" JS 04/12 "A medium-bodied, pleasant, lighter style of St.-Julien, the 2011 Beychevelle reveals a dark plum/ruby color in addition to notes of strawberries, black cherries, new saddle leather and hints of herbs and earth. Refreshing and delicate, it should drink well for 10-15 years...87-89" WA 04/12

Château Beychevelle is a historic estate and Grand Cru Classé wine in Saint Julien, Bordeaux that dates back to the 15th century. During the reign of Henri III of France, the estate was the home of Jean-Louis Nogaret de la Valette, the Duke of Epernon, who was so powerful that ships who passed before his Château had to lower their sails. Hence the proprietary motif of the ship with the “basse-voile” (lowered sail) and the griffin, who according to legend would guard the cellar of wine god Dionysius.    Wines have been produced here since the 17th century. It was classified as a “fourth growth” (Quatrième Cru) in the 1855 Classification. It has passed through the hands of many owners since its begninnings, and is now part of the Grande Millésimes de France. The vineyards are planted with 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, with an average vine age of 25 years. The Grand Vin of the estate is Château Beychevelle, and their second wine, Admiral de Beychevelle.  Read less

47% cabernet sauvignon 47% merlot 4% cabernet franc and 2% petit verdot. The 250 hectare estate is planted in deep gravel with an average vine age of 25 years. Aged 18 months in 50% new oak. Notes of blackberry and Santa Rosa plum dominate the nose which also shows aromas of eucalyptus clove mocha and vanilla. Medium-bodied on the palate the tannins are broad and mouth-filling. There is a high level of acidity present but also enough fruit to balance it and allow for a long lingering finish. Give it 5-8 years to come together and enjoy through 2030. Tasted twice. Alex Shaw.
