Château Beychevelle is a historic estate and Grand Cru Classé wine in Saint Julien, Bordeaux that dates back to the 15th century. During the reign of Henri III of France, the estate was the home of Jean-Louis Nogaret de la Valette, the Duke of Epernon, who was so powerful that ships who passed before his Château had to lower their sails. Hence the proprietary motif of the ship with the “basse-voile” (lowered sail) and the griffin, who according to legend would guard the cellar of wine god Dionysius.    Wines have been produced here since the 17th century. It was classified as a “fourth growth” (Quatrième Cru) in the 1855 Classification. It has passed through the hands of many owners since its begninnings, and is now part of the Grande Millésimes de France. The vineyards are planted with 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, with an average vine age of 25 years. The Grand Vin of the estate is Château Beychevelle, and their second wine, Admiral de Beychevelle.  Read less

Both the 1989 and 1990 wines scored slightly lower than in previous tastings. In contrast to the 1990, the 1989 Beychevelle, which usually performs better than it did in the recent tasting, is an elegant, medium-bodied wine with soft tannin, copious quantities of ripe, herb-tinged, blackcurrant fruit, some evidence of toasty oak, and a generous, velvety-textured finish. It appears to be evolving quickly, and can be drunk now as well as over the next 15 years

Slightly rustic, but featuring loads of chocolate and berry and hints of flowers. Full-bodied, with minty, floral and cherry flavors and a velvety texture. Loads of mouthpuckering tannins. Needs time. Blockbuster for Beychevelle.--1989 Bordeaux horiz... Wine Spectator. A Bordeaux Blend wine from Bordeaux in France. 1989 Beychevelle 375ml

There is so much tobacco and red fruit on the nose of this wine. Exotic and decadent. Full-bodied, with a sleek and racy tannin structure and fresh acidity. Refreshing and clean, yet mature and wild. Still one of the big surprises of the vintage.-89... Wine Spectator. A Bordeaux Blend wine from Bordeaux in France. 1989 Beychevelle 750ml
