Chateau Bellevue was founded in 1998, with its oldest origins dating to the 1960s. the project is aided by Chateau Cheval Blanc’s former enologist, Gilles Paquet. 65% merlot, 30% cabernet franc, 5% cabernet sauvignon. Aged mostly in new oak barrels, 90% French oak, 10% American oak, and some Chateau Haut Brion 2nd barrels.
Good medium ruby. Superripe aromas of cherry liqueur, licorice and sweet oak. Dense and sappy on entry, then concentrated but not overly sweet in the middle, with brisk acidity framing the black cherry and licorice flavors. This boasts impressive material but today the wine comes across as a bit chunky, with slightly tough tannins. Perhaps in an awkward stage.
In great vintages such as 2005, the price of classified Bordeaux rises faster than you can say “Sacré bleu!” As wine from the famous communes become increasingly harder to afford, it only makes sense to explore the lesser known satellite appellations to save some dough. In typical years, wine from these regions is nothing to write home about, but in strong vintages many hidden gems can be uncovered for a song. This great example hails from Côtes de Castillon, Saint-Emilion’s eastern neighbor. The wine displays very ripe aromatics of crème de cassis, subtle strawberry, dried plum and vanilla. The mouthfeel is round and supple through the initial attack and mid-palate, offering an almost fleshy texture amid fruit flavors reminiscent of its nose. Clearly demonstrating Right Bank personality, the terrior accents of scorched earth, mineral and pen ink add complexity while baker’s chocolate, attributable to the new French oak, adds a further degree of silkiness.
A satellite appellation of Saint-Emilion, Côtes de Castillon produces wines of similar quality to its more famous neighbor at a much reduced price point. Merlot plays the starring role in this typical right bank Bordeaux blend: 65% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. Although still young, the texture is broad and rich with layers of black fruits peppered with a fresh, woodsy earthiness. Tannins are firm, but not drying — drinkable now or built for aging.
