The Cru Artisan classification is only given to independently owned Chateaux that offer consistently high quality wine. Reestablished by the French government in 2006, only 44 Chateaux have currently earned the Cru Artisan designation making it even more exclusive than Cru Bourgeois. Château Bégadan fits the description to a tee. This modest property in the heart of the Médoc is run by Monsieur and Madame Salette, the fifth generation of vignerons to make wine at the estate. The wines are made using sustainable, traditional agricultural methods, and much of the work is still done by hand. The vineyard is 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Sauvignon. From the outstanding 2009 vintage, this Cru Artisan Medoc has been aged for 18 months in oak, and show distinct flavors of black currant, anise, cocoa and cigar box cedar. For 2009 Bordeaux of this quality it is a remarkable value.
