What to Expect

Arguably the most renowned wines on earth, the classed growths of Bordeaux continue to epitomize the power and complexity Bordeaux blends are capable of. While most wines here are based on Cabernet Sauvignon, both Merlot and Cabernet Franc play important roles in adding layered complexity to the finished wines, and allow winemakers in each commune within the region to use the blend that is best suited to their unique combination of soil and meso-climate. The most famous communes each have their own classic traits with St. Estephe giving full, if rustic wines, from the heavy clay soils, to Paulliac's elegant balance of ripe fruits, minerality and structure to St. Julien's rich blackberry core and supple feel. Moving to the South of the region brings one to Margaux, with its notes of flowers and berries draped over a feminine frame, and then to the Graves region with wines redolent of tobacco, gravel and smoke. To the East lies the famous appellations of St. Emillion, with its wonderfully ripe Cabernet Franc, and Pomerol where Merlot rules the roost and produces deep, plush wines of uncommon refinement.

The vineyards of Château Arnauton are at the highest elevation in the Bordeaux right bank region. Densely planted vines of over 2,000 per acre, cover the southern slope of the Tertre de Montahut and average 30 years of age. The height and the ideal southern exposure guarantee perfect ripeness for these low yield grapes. The grapes are hand sorted at the winery and vinified slowly over 20 days at controlled temperature. A blend of 88% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and 2% Malbec is created and aged if French oak barrels for 12 months. Consulting oenologist Stéphane Toutoundji, does his magic here read more...

Pours an inky opaque purple-black, with aromas of cassis and black cherry laced with hints of smoky vanilla. Dense, dark and flavorful, but with a striking limestone minerality that lifts the dense fruit. Finishes with a whiff of tannin, and an intriguing coffee note.

For the price (you can find it for $15 on other sites) this is a wonderful "drink now" wine. It should get a little more depth with age, but you simply can't beat it with a fillet with port reduction sauce or BBQ lamb. A real treat, especially if you enjoy the Fronsac earthy quality.
