Chatea St. Jean’s life started in 1920, when it was built as a summer home for Ernest and Maude Goff. It is located in Sugarloaf Ridge in the Sonoma Valley near the legendary Kenwood, California. While the 250 acres of land were originally planted with white grapes, Prohibition encouraged the planting of prunes and walnuts instead. When Chateau St. Jean was founded in 1973, the chateau was restored and opened to the public in honor of the Goff family. As the company says, “only the finest” from their wines, and they delivered on that promise in quick time. In 1999, Chateau St. Jean’s 1996 Cinq Cépages Cabernet Sauvignon won “Wine of the Year,” making the chateau the first Sonoma winery to receive this award. Chateau St. Jean was one of the pioneers in vineyard designation, stressing the importance of a grape’s origin. They didn’t just talk the talk - they took grapes from successful vineyards and made individually labeled Chardonnays, Pinot Noir, and Fumé Blanc. With the hard work and dedication of Margo Van Staaveren, the winemaker for Chateau St. Jean, the winery is able to make high quality wines with a persistent signature flavor profile across different vintages. Gorgeous Cabernet, offering a mix of ripe, rich, fleshy currant and blackberry fruit, with hints of herb, olive and sage. Finishes with a firm, structured backbone and ripe tannins giving it depth and richness. Drink now through 2014.

This 250-acre estate was founded in 1973, passed from the original owners to Japanese drinks giants Suntory in 1984, and then to Beringer Blass in 1997. Cinq Cépages comprises the five Bordeaux grape varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon (76%), Merlot (10%), Cabernet Franc (8%), Malbec (4%) and Petit Verdot (2%). Winemaker Steve Reeder uses fruit from Alexander Valley, Sonoma Valley, Knights Valley and Dry Creek Valley. The 1996 was Wine of the Year 1999.

The wine's cherry aromas are almost stewy, thanks to the toast and eucalyptus notes that envelop them; expect more cherry, soy and some herbal complexity in the mouth. Medium-weight; closes with tart red fruit and full-on tannin.

Chunky aromas of red and black fruit mixed with copious oak start it off. The next phase is a spicy clove-tinged, sweet-plum palate that is downright chewy. While it's undeniably rich throughout, it doesn't hit the highest marks, and there's a slight green note at the core.

Smooth and harmonious, with ripe, rich, supple plum and blackberry fruit, shaded by cedar, anise, black cherry and spice attributes. Firms up and flexes its tannic strength on the finish. Very well-made. Drink now through 2010.

Made in a light style, the medium-bodied 1998 Cinq Cepages (75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Merlot, 6% Malbec, 2% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit-Verdot) exhibits a sweet nose of toast, earth, cedar, licorice, black cherries, and chocolate. There is excellent concentration, but because of the vintage conditions, this wine does not possess much volume, breadth of flavor, or intensity. Drink it during its first 10-12 years of life.

A lovely Cab, elegant and harmonious. Strikes an even balance between cherry and blackberry flavors, smoky oak, sweet herbs, cocoa and spice. The tannins are beautifully ripe and soft. Of all the qualities, balance is foremost.
