Charles Smith Wines Kung Fu Girl Riesling Columbia Valley 2016

Member Review by Mr Dolce:

Delightful libation, great with food or by itself. Low acidity for a Reisling, but outstanding nonetheless.

First there was K Vintners, then the Magnificent Wine Company and now winemaker Charles Smith brings you his latest revelation. Charles Smith Wines: The Modernist Project is a response to how people generally consume wine today, that is immediately…as in immediately after being purchased at a market, restaurant or bar, to be drunk straight away. Wine in this category is typically ether simple, or is a wine that would be much better a few years down the road. ‘Modernist Project’ wines are about putting as much into the bottle as possible. The intent is to create wines to be enjoyed now, but with typicity with regards to variety—that is merlot that tastes like merlot—and to the vineyard—wine that tastes like where it was grown. The wines are full of flavor, balanced, and true to their place of origin. Owner-winemaker Charles Smith with his big hair, kick ass attitude and bold packaging arrived in the Walla Walla Valley following eleven years in Scandinavia managing rock bands. Originally hailing from northern California, he has been involved with wine personally and professionally his entire life. Read less

Floral, not overly sweet Riesling from Oregon. Went well with spicy pad thai. Great value, and not that candy cough syrup stuff you get with so many rieslings.

Citrus, melon, pineapple, tangy finish, dry for a Riesling, overall pleasant Washington wine.

After many years of seeing this wine get loads of accolades, I had to try it. I have tasted thousands of Rieslings over the past 40 years, as this is my favorite grape. The wine has a perfect acid balance and is on the drier side. Flavors are mostly citrus without the complexity or fruit offered in Germany. It is somewhat singular and simple but pleasant. This is a Riesling for those that prefer dry wines. My rating-- 84 ,

Had this at Plantation Grill in Kawaiehae, HI 7-19-14. With lobster linguine. Very fruity, sweet and smooth. Fresh!

Citrus, nectarine and pear, sweet-tart, off-dry and refreshing.

Tasting Notes: Yet another terrific vintage. Pure, focused and mouthwatering. Citrus blossom, lime leaf, white peach intermingle with mineral that fills the palate. Carries on to a long refreshing finish. Food Pairings: Thai or Chinese food, five spice pork or duck, fresh seafood

Tasting Notes: Crushed minerals run through the heart of this pure and satisfying Riesling. The aromas of white peach, lime leaves, Linden tree, and crush stone echo in the palate with a long, fresh finish. Vintage: 2014 had an early spring and a wonderful, long summer with cool nights to help maintain great acidity in the grapes. Going into the fall, temperatures cooled down quite a bit throughout the state, and we were able to hang the fruit for a longer period of time before harvest. This combination allowed us to develop more complex flavors, while still maintaining the acidity, to produce bright, focused white wine. TA: 8.3 g/L pH: 3.04 Alc: 12%

Apricot, kumquat, nectarine and lime leaves. A great mid-palate intensity with a long, long minerally finish.

Clean, fresh and incredibly pure, the 2013 Charles Smith Riesling Kung Fu Girl is shockingly good given the price (and the volume, as they produce a massive amount of this cuvee). Lychee, citrus, mint and classic minerality all show here, and it’s medium-bodied, beautifully balanced and finishes cleanly, with perfectly integrated acidity and only subtle sweetness. Enjoy this rock star effort over the coming year or two.

Top 100 #43 Charles Smith hits a home run for the second year in a row with his Kung Fu Girl Riesling (the 2012 hit No. 51 last year). The wine offers tremendous quality for the price, an impressive feat considering it’s one of the largest production single-vineyard Rieslings in the world. It comes from the Evergreen Vineyard in the Ancient Lakes AVA, which is known for producing crisp, minerally white wines. Winemaker Brennon Leighton, formerly of Efeste, helped oversee production of the 2013. 128,806 cases made.

Crisp and sleek, with juicy, expansive nectarine and peach flavors that play against citrusy acidity, finishing with zing and a sense of softness that lets the finish keep singing. Drink now through 2020.
