Charles Smith Boom Boom Syrah 2010 set the Washington State wine world on fire with his "House Wine" and continues that tradition with the explosive Boom Boom Syrah. As the name would suggest, this is no shrinking violet of a wine. (Though you might detect some violets on the nose of the wine.) If you like your wine unabashedly bold and a bit in-your-face, the 2010 Boom Boom Syrah is just the ticket. If you are interested in seeing what Washington can achieve with Syrah at a modest price, the Boom Boom is a wine to pick up by the case. It's nice to have a go-to wine that is going to give you exactly what you are looking for. And though the Boom Boom may have a brash personality on the outside and in the glass, it can certainly be tamed by some bold flavors, like a slow-cooked pot roast or any braised meat that's been sitting in a crock pot all day, just waiting for you to get home and pour yourself a glass.

Deep, rich, ripe. The only reason I give this an 'OK' rating is that it seems pretty one dimensional. Yes it has big powerful fruit...but that's about it. Stream-lined on the palate and wines that lack complexity or structure are just ok for me.

Contrived with no aging potential whatsoever. This wine did not evolve at all in the bottle. I would describe it as boring. Not worth the drink. Very disappointing.

This is a fun and boisterous wine. Drink it young, but give it some time in the glass to open up. Once you do it will reward you with lots of dark fruit, cassis, smoke and graphite and hints of vanilla on the nose. The first impression on the palette is an explosion of jammy dark berries, sweet spice, cassis, black pepper and a cross between smoked meats and French roast coffee beans, with a warm finish that highlights more of the smoke and some graphite and lingering black pepper and blackberries. It’s a blast of a wine for around $15 and a great accompaniment for grilled meats this summer or anytime.

I love peppery wines. This is a great dry red

Wine SpectatorBright and effusive, this is juicy with lively flavors of blackberry, plum and sweet spices, lingering on the open-textured finish. Drink now. (04/09)

Roasted blackberry, blueberry and plum make aromas follow on to the seductive and intense palate. There is wonderful purity where each flavor folds into the next. In addition to the fruit, a deep, exotic element really set this wine off- root beer syrup, smoky bacon, African coffee and fruitcake notes add dimension. It's a thrilling find at this price!
