First there was K Vintners, then the Magnificent Wine Company and now winemaker Charles Smith brings you his latest revelation. Charles Smith Wines: The Modernist Project is a response to how people generally consume wine today, that is immediately…as in immediately after being purchased at a market, restaurant or bar, to be drunk straight away. Wine in this category is typically ether simple, or is a wine that would be much better a few years down the road. ‘Modernist Project’ wines are about putting as much into the bottle as possible. The intent is to create wines to be enjoyed now, but with typicity with regards to variety—that is merlot that tastes like merlot—and to the vineyard—wine that tastes like where it was grown. The wines are full of flavor, balanced, and true to their place of origin. Owner-winemaker Charles Smith with his big hair, kick ass attitude and bold packaging arrived in the Walla Walla Valley following eleven years in Scandinavia managing rock bands. Originally hailing from northern California, he has been involved with wine personally and professionally his entire life. Read less

The winemaker says that there is supposed to be mango, peach and lychee going on, but I get none of that. I thought this was a really contrived Chardonnay and not one I would go back to in the future. I usually enjoy Charles Smith wines, so I really wanted to like it. I just didn't enjoy it; I don't think it delivered what the label promised.

This is a great summer Chardonnay, a much leaner and crisper style not typically seen in domestic Chardonnays and it is refreshing to find a domestically produced Chardonnay that is not buttery or over done with oak. This wine is reminds me of some white Burgundies, such as Chablis, with its chalk minerality and floral aromas. Eventhough this wine has a bit of old world character you still find the enormouse amount of red apple aromas and flavors that are pretty distinctive of Washington State Chardonnay. The palate is lean but full bodied with well balanced flavors of red apple, melon and honey leading to a crisp but lingering finish.

Tasting Notes: A shimmery, brilliant, green golden of a wine. Aromatic pear, tangerine, guava, but more than anything, TRUE CHARDONNAY FLAVOR. Add a vein of minerality running through the middle. Long and satisfying. Food Parings: Golden squash with Sauteed Shrimp

Notes: A shimmering, brilliant, green golden of a wine. Aromatic pear, tangerine, guava, but more than anything, TRUE CHARDONNAY FLAVOR. Add a vein of minerality running through the middle. Long and satisfying. Vintage: 2014 started out uneven, but eventually turned out to be one of the more beautiful years. Like the proverbial ugly duckling, it became a swan. As the season progressed, the nights got cooler and the days got longer and everything evened out, making for beautiful fruit. As usual, we were happy to be in the cooler and more unique sites in the states for this vintage. TA: 5.5 grams/L pH: 3.54 Alc: 13.5%

Tasting Notes: Shimmering in the glass. This Chardonnay has a lot of energy. Hibiscus flower, stone fruit, apple blossom & a touch of lemon cream. Long and beautiful; minerally and delicious. Vintage: 2013 was the warmest vintage since 2003, but cooled off just in time for harvest. The resulting wines were less likely to tip into overripe flavors or high alcohol levels, and picking proceeded at a normal pace. Total tonnage was up about 5% over 2012, a record for the state. - Winery Total Acidity: 6.2 grams/L pH: 3.52 Alcohol: 13.2%

This is really good. Pure, focused, with great balance. Layers of tangerine, Asian pear, apple blossoms and minerals. The finish is long and so satisfying.....Did someone say $12? I'd pay $20! - Charles SmithAlcohol: 13.5%Total Acid: .67pH: 3.38Residual Sugar: n/a

A juicy, lively effort, the 2012 Charles Smith Chardonnay Eve is another superb value from this team. Citrus blossom, mineral and hints of lime emerge from the glass, and this medium-bodied, refreshing white will drink nicely for a year or three.

Light and polished, with an almond note weaving through the pineapple and spice flavors, finishing with modest intensity. Drink now. 24,051 cases made.

Beautifully rich yet fresh and tasty. Aromas of white nectarine, mango and dew covered rose. White raspberry, leechi fruit and peach combine with a lush, soft mouthfeel that gives way to a racey little finish.... sinfully delicious! - Charles Smith
