Charles Melton Shiraz Barossa Valley 1995

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Lovely nose, sweet and gently spicy with cinnamon, spice and leather. It has subtle mint, black raspberry, prune fruit and some face powder notes. A bit past peak, but with a fine mineral base and red fruit with some blueberry. Soft and opulent, this has real power on the short but voluminous finish. The nose seems to show some classic vanilla oak. Finishes with a bit of earthy bitterness. Chunky and a bit fudgy. 87pts

It was in the mid 80's that Charlie and a small band of Barossa winemakers turned their winemaking efforts to what was considered then a couple of unfashionable varieties; Shiraz and Grenache. With these varieties, Charlie built a small range of classic dry reds including a Grenache/Shiraz/Mourvedre blend called the Nine Popes. These wines were initially styled on those from the Rhone but are now considered leading examples of the varieties in their own right. Read less

The nose was big and rich, almost palatable, like a doughnut shop with vanilla, raspberry and candies. On the palate, it was mouth-filling and sticky with black fruits, sweet spices and a big sticky sweet finish.

Favorite of the night. Interesting combo of Concord grape, light bark and cosmetic powder on the nose which contrasted sort of brilliantly with the gamey, savory, dill-tinged palate.
