Charles Krug Cabernet Sauvignon Yountville 2008 750ML
It is a solidly made wine with 8% Merlot in the blend. A deep ruby/purple color is followed by aromas of black currants, Dried herbs, spice and subtle wood. Rich, ripe and medium to full-bodied, with excellent concentration, low acidity, and a lush texture, it should drink well for 6ndash;8 years. It is an excellent value.
Charles Krug was the first Mondavi family foray into the Napa Valley, a historic property that remained in the hands of Peter Mondavirsquo;s family after a dispute over business expenses that led Robert Mondavi to establish his own winery. Peter Mondavi continued to pronounce his name with an American accent (mon-Day-vi) and never bought into the Napa Valley style that his brother helped to create. The Charles Krug brand remained traditional and relatively sleepy, even with the assets of 850 acres of vines throughout the valley. In 1999, the Mondavis began replanting their vineyards and retooling their winery, with the results starting to show in wines like this brisk 2006 cabernet from the relatively cool reaches of Yountville. Its depth of fresh, purple plum fruit and potent tannins would structure a wine at a much higher price.
Winery Tasting Notes - Our Peter Mondavi Family Cabernet Sauvignon provokes aromas of anise and pomegranate that melds with smoky overtones. On the palate, flavors of ripe red berries and hickory bring out hints of nutmeg. Well balanced oak gives way to smooth, rich finish for this exceptional wine. The 2008 growing season saw widespread frost damage and challenging summer conditions which reduced yields and produced a lighter than average vintage. A dry spring and a lengthy late April frost, the coldest in more than three decades, were followed by three odd heat waves before mid July rain in some paces, and high winds, all during critical bloom period. As a result, grapes were smaller, but more concentrated. Despite a 'crazy weather year', wines produced in this season were well-structured, elegant and full of flavor.
Charles Krug is the oldest winery in Napa Valley. Established in Yountville in 1861 it's in its 150th year and still producing top quality/value Napa Cab. The Mondavi family purchased the winery in the 1940's and today Peter Mondavi and his sons run the day-to-day operation. Grapes for this 2008 were sourced from estate vineyards in Yountville and other prime Napa Valley locales. 2008 produced a smaller than usual crop but of very high quality. A blend of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Syrah, 5% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot, 3% Petite Sirah, 2% Malbec, 2% Cabernet Franc aged 21 months in French and American oak. Ripe cassis and black cherry flavors mingle with dark chocolate, spices and toast with supple tannins. This 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon won big in 2011 with a Double Gold Medal awarded from the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition, a Gold Medal from the San Francisco International Wine Competition, a whopping 94 from the Ultimate Beverage Challenge and a Highly Recommended Status. Add to that a 92 Rating from the California State Fair. In addition, the 22nd Annual Wine & Spirits Restaurant Poll name it the 22nd most popular domestic Cabernet by sommeliers from 216 participating restaurants.
