Charles Joguet Chinon les Petites Roches 2014

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

A really fine Chinon with darker fruit than may be typical. Almost curranty fruit marries with tobacco, ancho chili, crushed violets, and potting soil in a plush styled wine with good acidity and supporting tannins that gives this a wonderful mouthfeel. The finish continues the theme with a bit more pronounced acidity refreshing the palate and pushing the fruit more towards the red end of the spectrum. Very fresh yet very ripe and very difficult to finish the entire bottle. 90pts

One should not mask the nature of the various terroirs by blending their juices, but instead enhance them through separate vinification. In this way, one can also distinguish between vines of different ages. Why lose the freshness of a young vine by mixing it with the stronger tannins of an old vine? Read less

Very dark purply color. Lots of berries on the nose, but also with a kind of annoying "olivy" scent. Lots of fun in the mouth. Fairly robust, but not over the top. Flavors include blackberry, tobacco, and some peppery spice. Tannin hits around the edge of the tongue. Olive that was detected in the nose is slightly noticeably at first, but, then disappears quickly. Slightly tart on the back of the palate. US$18.99 at Total Wines.

Medium-bodied with an endlessly changing bouquet. Earthy aromas with dark berries, pink peppercorn, redcurrants and tobacco. A solid red wine that's drinking very well today. Enjoy with rich fare.
