Chardonnay Flowers Vineyard & Winery 2007

Winemaker's Notes:

Fruit was rigorously hand sorted and gently whole cluster pressed. The juice was settled off heavy lees and put to barrel for fermentation. Temperatures were in the 65-72 degree range followed by stirring of light lees for 4 months in barrel. Mostly native yeast and malo-lactic (ML) fermentations with only a few lots fermented using cultured burgundy isolates. Fermentations were complete by March of 2008.

As nursery owners in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, Walt and Joan Flowers had long dreamed of combining their love of wine with their passion for agriculture. They knew they wanted to produce their favorite varietals, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir; what they didn't know was that their path would eventually lead them across country to Northern California's rugged Sonoma Coast. After responding to a small classified ad in a national wine publication, that's exactly where they landed. In 1989, after many information-gathering trips to Napa and Sonoma, Walt and Joan purchased 321 acres, including a ridge top, high above the Pacific Ocean on the northern Sonoma Coast. With the same determination they drew on to build their successful nursery business; the Flowers proceeded with the dream of producing their favorite cool-climate varietals in a place they believed uniquely suited to growing them. Today, Flowers Winery produces 15,000 cases of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from its two estate properties, Camp Meeting Ridge and Flowers Ranch, as well as select vineyards in the coolest regions of the Sonoma Coast AVA, which are farmed to Flowers' specifications by their own crews. In addition to direct consumer sales, the wines are sold to fine restaurants and retailers in the US and overseas. Read less

A bit of heat on the nose, but definitely classic in Chardonnay flavors. A hint of sweetness on the attack is pleasant and welcome in this wine, with the wood showing way more on the finish.

A funky little bottle of wine, this chardonnay is buttery with loads of oak and a nice long finish of blue cheese.

Big and floral, almost perfume-like. Apple and apricot flavor. There are some italian herb qualities as well.

Buttery nose with more of that sweet dairy on the mouth, little bit of pineapple and apricot. The finish is slow, a little sharp. It's kind of fun.

Rating: 90/100 - As reviewed by Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine (www.cgcw.com) in the October 2010 issue. Although it is not an especially blustery or bombastic wine, the latest from Flowers displays a fair bit of complexity and depth. It marries incisive Chardonnay fruit with sweetening touches of brioche and crème caramel, and it shows the concentration and acid-firmed structure needed to encourage real hopes for age. Its youthful restraint should in no way be seen as a failing, and we anticipate very good things as it slowly evolves over the next several years.Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine aging recommendation: Drinkable now. Further bottle aging can improve this wine.

For this Sonoma Coast Chardonnay, Flowers winery has maintained long-term contracts with vineyards. Extremely Burgundian in style, this is cool-climate Chardonnay at its best. Flowers has produces a white that is well-balanced, with a slight creaminess, while notes of mushroom and citrus reveal themselves on the palate.

Tasting Notes:

Showing balanced depth and complexity, light straw to golden color. Aromas unfold with layers of lemon drop, pear, apricot and wet stone minerality. This vintage shows crispness and intense fruit on the palate; lush and balanced citrus finish with roundness in mouth feel. Showing very well now and will continue to gain complexity for 1 - 3 years.
