Chappellet Vineyard Red Bordeaux Blend Napa Valley Mountain Cuvée 2010

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Dark and deep with bitter cocoa notes adding detail to some orchard fruit and black fruit, all framed by slightly peppery oak. This is a touch thick and rich and yet it is quite firm. It is classic California with the fruit being round and almost opulent and revealing slightly jammy blackberry flavors, with gentle hints of mint, herbs, earth and mineral adding some complexity. The texture is quite fine, firm and a little tense, yet not really drying or oppressive. The fruit is youthful and tight but obvious with a fine persistence. A bit gangly today, this has obvious potential but is already enjoyable. 90pts

The Chappellets’ romance with Pritchard Hill started when Donn and Molly Chappellet first glimpsed its spectacular vistas. Perched 1,200 feet above the floor of the Napa Valley, the atmosphere at the Chappellet family's winery and Pritchard Hill estate vineyards is serene and peaceful. You can't help but fall in love with the breathtaking views and the gentle mountain Donn and Molly Chappellet made their home. The Chappellet family has been crafting world class wines from their Pritchard Hill estate vineyards since 1967. Spurred by the notion that Bacchus loves the hills and that mountain fruit would make superior wine, Chappellet followed the advice of legendary winemaker André Tchelistcheff and settled on the rocky eastern slopes of the Napa Valley. The Chappellets were the first to plant vineyards exclusively on high elevation hillsides and the second winery to be established in the Napa Valley after Prohibition. The foundation of Chappellet winemaking program is focused on creating extraordinary age-worthy Cabernet Sauvignon that expresses the unique characteristics of the fruit from Pritchard Hill. The rugged terroir of Chappellet's vineyards produces wines with great intensity and depth, qualities that define the world's finest wines. For four decades Chappellet wines have received high praise from wine critics and have been sought after by the world's premier collectors. Today the six Chappellet children share their parents’ romance with Pritchard Hill's complex rocky soils and magnificent views. They are passionate about preserving the land by using sustainable farming techniques and continuing what their parents started: making extraordinary wines that express the distinctiveness of Pritchard Hill. Smooth and balanced. Lovely blend with flavors of chocolate and cherries. Lots of oak. Has a nice finish reminiscent of a fine Scotch. Super for the price.

Nice blend of around 50% Cab, Merlot, and a handful of other bordeaux varietals. This wine can taste a little disjointed with oak and acidity, but it has a great core of fruit that wins out, making it a nice drink at a reasonable price. Coming from a winery that produces some of Napa's best cabs, so much the better.

Lots of Black Cherry, currant and dark fruit on the nose with some toasted spices in the background. The palate is similar but fades pretty quickly into a tart tannin filled finish.

smooth berry aromas, loaded with mountain fruit, raspberries, blackberries, black plums, currants and cocoa. Full bodied and enriching, chocolate finish, smooth texture.

A nice go-to wine, popular with both the "big boy" crowd and those who prefer something more subtle and food-friendly. A nice long finish.

This is the wine to choose when you re looking for vivid, mouth-filling fruit flavors. Our Mountain Cuvee is a winemaker s blend that beautifully expresses the distinctive qualities of the traditional Bordeaux varietals, and is crafted for early consumption.

Our 2009 Mountain Cuvee shows the appealing depth and nuance of a true Bordeaux blend. The aromas offer a complex mélange of spicy red fruit, rum raison, cedar, sweet tobacco, clove, cinnamon, dark chocolate and bay leaf. On the palate, the texture is smooth and lush, with lingering flavors of sweet cherry and plum. Though there is ample weight and richness, elegance is really the theme of this complex and balanced wine. - Winery ** SOLD OUT **

Created to be accessible, fun and ready to drink, this scrumptious Cab is much more, and with a price tag that brings the great taste of Chappellet within reach of ordinary wine drinkers. This is a full-bore, intensely fruitful Cabernet packed with ripe currant, plump and blueberry flavors, backed with cocoa and sweet oak accents, and smooth, velvety tannins.

The Mountain Cuvée is a blend of softer and more developed lots of Cabernet Sauvignon with Chappellet's rich, weighty Merlot. The result is an incredibly aromatic nose, rich mid-palate and lengthy finish.

Chappellet makes outstanding Cabs, and this is one of two high-end bottlings it makes every year. Like the Signature Cabernet, the Mountain Cuvée is made from hillside vineyards, but is styled with softer tannins so it is approachable on release. It's also a little lower-priced. This vintage shows bountiful aromas of blueberry, baking spices and kirsch, leading to layers of mint and black pepper. The nose is big and rich, suggesting the formidable character of this wine. A textured mouthfeel and weighty mid-palate are softened by notes of black currant, raspberry and cedar.
