Chappellet Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley Pritchard Hill Estate Vineyard 2001

Member Review by EMark:

Beaurtiful deep garnet color. Nose detects expected Oak. Very round mouthfilling palate. Good balance of acid, alcohol and fruit--berries. Tannin around the edge indicates further aging potential, but drinking this wine right now is a pleasure. Enjoyed this wine with a dinner of filet mignon w/ a mushroom sauce. US$94.99 in 2004.

The Chappellets’ romance with Pritchard Hill started when Donn and Molly Chappellet first glimpsed its spectacular vistas. Perched 1,200 feet above the floor of the Napa Valley, the atmosphere at the Chappellet family's winery and Pritchard Hill estate vineyards is serene and peaceful. You can't help but fall in love with the breathtaking views and the gentle mountain Donn and Molly Chappellet made their home. The Chappellet family has been crafting world class wines from their Pritchard Hill estate vineyards since 1967. Spurred by the notion that Bacchus loves the hills and that mountain fruit would make superior wine, Chappellet followed the advice of legendary winemaker André Tchelistcheff and settled on the rocky eastern slopes of the Napa Valley. The Chappellets were the first to plant vineyards exclusively on high elevation hillsides and the second winery to be established in the Napa Valley after Prohibition. The foundation of Chappellet winemaking program is focused on creating extraordinary age-worthy Cabernet Sauvignon that expresses the unique characteristics of the fruit from Pritchard Hill. The rugged terroir of Chappellet's vineyards produces wines with great intensity and depth, qualities that define the world's finest wines. For four decades Chappellet wines have received high praise from wine critics and have been sought after by the world's premier collectors. Today the six Chappellet children share their parents’ romance with Pritchard Hill's complex rocky soils and magnificent views. They are passionate about preserving the land by using sustainable farming techniques and continuing what their parents started: making extraordinary wines that express the distinctiveness of Pritchard Hill. [Blue Hill, lamb] Very tight when first opened. Decanted for 2.5 hours, when it began to open and seemed to plateau. Striking fluorescent purple color. Aromas of cassis, ripe red fruit, anise. Concentrated. On the palate blackberry, cherry, chocolate, and spice. Nice structure that suggests a long life. Moderate tannins that are not fully integrated are a reminder of its youth. I knew that I was premature but could not wait. And others suggest, I will wait 5-7 yrs to open my second and last bottle. Overall fanatastic stuff that may merit a score of 96-98 in the future. 92-94

Big and rich in the mouth, with gorgeous, velvety tannins. Offers a juicy plum and cassis core, with oak, tobacco and earth accents, and a char and cocoa note on the back end. As compelling as the flavors are, it'll be the mouthfeel that wins you over.

Grounded in the steep, volcanic soils of eastern Napa, this luxurious Cabernet gives layers of richness. From a base of black fig and date, it rises to savory spice and earth tones, the plush, ripe tannin offering chocolate, the freshness of the acidity bringing mint. A textural pleasure.

The impressive 1999 Cabernet Sauvignon Pritchard Hill boasts a dense purple color in addition to notes of blueberries, cassis, vanilla, and lead pencil shavings. The complex aromatics are accompanied by a medium to full-bodied, rich, structured, well-defined effort that will benefit from a few more years of cellaring. It should age for 10-15+ years.

This is a monster Cabernet, in the best sense. Comprised of all five Bordeaux varieties, itrsquo;s bone dry, enormously complex and firmly masculine, with very big, hard tannins. Concentration on the flavors shows layers of blackberries, black currants, blueberries, mocha, violets, sweet charred oak and a firm grounding of minerals. An outstanding wine from the Pritchard Hill region east of the Silverado Trail, but one that needs cellar time to resolve the tannins. Better after 2013, and should develop for many years after that.

The 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Pritchard Hill boasts glorious notes of flowers, blueberries, blackberries, boysenberries, plums and incense. Full-bodied and layered with tremendous depth as well as purity and that nobility of great Cabernet Sauvignon that very few regions in the world can achieve, this youngster, although approachable and seductive now, should evolve for 25-30 more years. Statisticians may be interested in knowing that the Signature is a blend of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Malbec, 4% Petit Verdot, 1% Merlot and 1% Cabernet Franc. The Pritchard Hill is composed of 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Petit Verdot, 8% Malbec, 2% Merlot and 1% Cabernet Franc.

Big, ripe and complex, but light on its feet. An elegant, spicy mix of rich currant, anise, toasty oak, espresso and subtle herbal scents, all of which fold together nicely, ending with a long, persistent finish. Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot and Malbec. Best from 2010 through 2016.
