Chappellet Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2009

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Jammy on the nose with high-toned notes of leather, smoke and cassis adding complexity. This was fairly soft and resolved in the mouth with a nice earthy core to the fruit and a spicy cinnamon aspect that accentuated the slightly coarse, chalky tannins that emerged on the finish. There’s a nice note of black fruit that remains but this is has past peak and should be drunk up. 89pts

The Chappellets’ romance with Pritchard Hill started when Donn and Molly Chappellet first glimpsed its spectacular vistas. Perched 1,200 feet above the floor of the Napa Valley, the atmosphere at the Chappellet family's winery and Pritchard Hill estate vineyards is serene and peaceful. You can't help but fall in love with the breathtaking views and the gentle mountain Donn and Molly Chappellet made their home. The Chappellet family has been crafting world class wines from their Pritchard Hill estate vineyards since 1967. Spurred by the notion that Bacchus loves the hills and that mountain fruit would make superior wine, Chappellet followed the advice of legendary winemaker André Tchelistcheff and settled on the rocky eastern slopes of the Napa Valley. The Chappellets were the first to plant vineyards exclusively on high elevation hillsides and the second winery to be established in the Napa Valley after Prohibition. The foundation of Chappellet winemaking program is focused on creating extraordinary age-worthy Cabernet Sauvignon that expresses the unique characteristics of the fruit from Pritchard Hill. The rugged terroir of Chappellet's vineyards produces wines with great intensity and depth, qualities that define the world's finest wines. For four decades Chappellet wines have received high praise from wine critics and have been sought after by the world's premier collectors. Today the six Chappellet children share their parents’ romance with Pritchard Hill's complex rocky soils and magnificent views. They are passionate about preserving the land by using sustainable farming techniques and continuing what their parents started: making extraordinary wines that express the distinctiveness of Pritchard Hill. The nose on this lively wine opens smoky and hot, with hints of dark berries, but little complexity. The palate launches with cassis, plum and cranberry, plus licorice and spice on top and a moderate finish. Although thin at the outset, the tannic structure supports evolution over time. At one hour, dark fruit emerges in the center and gives the wine a fuller mouth.

Big cherry nose, very fruit forward. Tannic with some high alcohol characteristics-- hot, but very smooth. Needs plenty of cellar time, but a very nice cab. Finish seemed hot, not much else.

[Penne with pesto] Dark purple; on the nose, lavender, currant, and spice; full-bodied, creamy, meaty, super concentrated; on the palate, blackberry, chocolate cedar, spice and smoke. When I first opened seemed a little lighter with detectable Petite Verdot, however over about 4 hours became heavier with super-concentrated fruit and more pronounced chocolate. A great drink now, but if you have only 1, hold it; it benefit from a few years in the bottle. I regret that I bought only 1. I find myself so frequently dissappointed by the many overpriced and overhyped Cabs, however at <$40 this is a great selection.

[Salt, lamb] Dark purple; aromas of currant, spice smoke. Didnt seem as concentrated as the last bottle, but still great. Cassis, cherry cola, spice, chocolate. If there is a better $30 Cab, I need to know about it.

[$120] black and red fruit, tar, tobacco. Lacked the big fruit and cassis I look for in a Cali cab, had a strong earthy quality. Actually it felt a little thin after a few hours. Drinking now, but the group clearly preferred the 2002 Signature. And I prefer the '00 Signature to this esp at 1/3 the price. Didn't purchase.

Ripe and spicy aromas offer vibrant layers of blackberry, cherry and pomegranate intermingled with notes of clove, cinnamon and anise. A savory impression of warm crust, accentuated by baked cherry and espresso elements, adds further depth to an already tantalizing nose. The wine is rich and mouthcoating from the first sip, displaying enticing fruit. Big rounded tannins add flavor and structure, as well as a firm but gentle grip that underscores beautiful concentration and viscosity. - Winery ** Only 9 in Stock **

Rating: 90/100 - As reviewed by Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine (www.cgcw.com) in the August 2010 issue. This wine sports much of the structural drama of its higher rated mate but comes with a less forceful fruit and thus finds its tannic muscularity grabbing a bit too much of the spotlight. It too will reward years of cellaring, and certainly is not a wine to pull out in the near future, but, for those who are inclined, this one has the build for a decade of patience.Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine aging recommendation: Cellar for future drinking. Wine will improve with bottle aging.

Rating: 97/100 - As reviewed by Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine (www.cgcw.com) in the August 2010 issue. Leaping out of the glass with its intensely fruity, keenly focused, layered aromas of black currants, hints of blackberries and crème caramel all tightly wrapped up in youthful vivacity that screams "aging potential", this deep and dramatic effort delivers an equally full measure of generous yet barely evolved flavor on the palate. Its full and supple yet somewhat fleshy palatefeel is may invite early drinking, but its underlying structure insures that it will improve for years to come,.Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine aging recommendation: Cellar for future drinking.
