Chappellet Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2008

Member Review by Wine Fire:

The nose on this lively wine opens smoky and hot, with hints of dark berries, but little complexity. The palate launches with cassis, plum and cranberry, plus licorice and spice on top and a moderate finish. Although thin at the outset, the tannic structure supports evolution over time. At one hour, dark fruit emerges in the center and gives the wine a fuller mouth.

The Chappellets’ romance with Pritchard Hill started when Donn and Molly Chappellet first glimpsed its spectacular vistas. Perched 1,200 feet above the floor of the Napa Valley, the atmosphere at the Chappellet family's winery and Pritchard Hill estate vineyards is serene and peaceful. You can't help but fall in love with the breathtaking views and the gentle mountain Donn and Molly Chappellet made their home. The Chappellet family has been crafting world class wines from their Pritchard Hill estate vineyards since 1967. Spurred by the notion that Bacchus loves the hills and that mountain fruit would make superior wine, Chappellet followed the advice of legendary winemaker André Tchelistcheff and settled on the rocky eastern slopes of the Napa Valley. The Chappellets were the first to plant vineyards exclusively on high elevation hillsides and the second winery to be established in the Napa Valley after Prohibition. The foundation of Chappellet winemaking program is focused on creating extraordinary age-worthy Cabernet Sauvignon that expresses the unique characteristics of the fruit from Pritchard Hill. The rugged terroir of Chappellet's vineyards produces wines with great intensity and depth, qualities that define the world's finest wines. For four decades Chappellet wines have received high praise from wine critics and have been sought after by the world's premier collectors. Today the six Chappellet children share their parents’ romance with Pritchard Hill's complex rocky soils and magnificent views. They are passionate about preserving the land by using sustainable farming techniques and continuing what their parents started: making extraordinary wines that express the distinctiveness of Pritchard Hill. Ripe and spicy aromas offer vibrant layers of blackberry, cherry and pomegranate intermingled with notes of clove, cinnamon and anise. A savory impression of warm crust, accentuated by baked cherry and espresso elements, adds further depth to an already tantalizing nose. The wine is rich and mouthcoating from the first sip, displaying enticing fruit. Big rounded tannins add flavor and structure, as well as a firm but gentle grip that underscores beautiful concentration and viscosity. - Winery ** Only 9 in Stock **

Napa Valley, CaliforniaChappellet Cabernet Sauvignon is the "Signature" wine of this acclaimed Napa Valley family winery founded by Donn Chappellet in 1967. This red wine gem is a benchmark for the hillside wines of the Napa Valley--structured to improve with age yet seductively forward in style. The dry, rocky soils of Pritchard Hill produce small grapes with intense flavor. The winemaker is Phillip Corallo-Titus. The 2006 vintage received a 94-point rating from Wine Spectator and was honored in the magazine's Top 100 Wines in 2009 as the #6 wine! The 2007 vintage sold out in a few weeks, and we're anticipating the same for this new 2008 release!Chappellet Cabernet Sauvignon is 76% Cabernet Sauvignon blended in the Bordeaux style with 18% Malbec, 4% Petit Verdot, 1% Merlot and 1% Cabernet Franc. Opening with expressive notes of blackberry, cherry, cinnamon and cocoa, this wine is full-bodied and rich. Hints of dark chocolate and espresso layer with spicy oak for added complexity. Smooth tannins infused with ripe sweet fruit create a lush, velvety texture. Rich waves of berry, spice and herbs create a lasting impression of finesse and structure in this Cabernet. While drinking beautifully already, the patient enophile will be rewarded for cellaring this gem for up to 15 years. The wine is long and elegant on the finish.Enjoy Chappellet Signature Cabernet Sauvignon with filet mignon, rack of lamb, venison, rich vegetable dishes and aged cheeses.
