Chappellet Signature Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2010

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Black fruit that's a little inky, violet dominates the slightly herbal nose which shows a little licorice with hints of red fruit but big grilled meat and black pepper top notes. This is lightly tight on entry with early milky chocolate notes followed by bright, fine grained tannins, mineral notes, smoking wood notes and jammy blackberry fruit. There's nice tension on the palate, some pleasant fruit layered over a rather tightly knit structure,. This is still a touch short on the finish but the lean, rugged feel here, showing fat, power and finesse bodes well for positive development in the bottle. 92pts

The Chappellets’ romance with Pritchard Hill started when Donn and Molly Chappellet first glimpsed its spectacular vistas. Perched 1,200 feet above the floor of the Napa Valley, the atmosphere at the Chappellet family's winery and Pritchard Hill estate vineyards is serene and peaceful. You can't help but fall in love with the breathtaking views and the gentle mountain Donn and Molly Chappellet made their home. The Chappellet family has been crafting world class wines from their Pritchard Hill estate vineyards since 1967. Spurred by the notion that Bacchus loves the hills and that mountain fruit would make superior wine, Chappellet followed the advice of legendary winemaker André Tchelistcheff and settled on the rocky eastern slopes of the Napa Valley. The Chappellets were the first to plant vineyards exclusively on high elevation hillsides and the second winery to be established in the Napa Valley after Prohibition. The foundation of Chappellet winemaking program is focused on creating extraordinary age-worthy Cabernet Sauvignon that expresses the unique characteristics of the fruit from Pritchard Hill. The rugged terroir of Chappellet's vineyards produces wines with great intensity and depth, qualities that define the world's finest wines. For four decades Chappellet wines have received high praise from wine critics and have been sought after by the world's premier collectors. Today the six Chappellet children share their parents’ romance with Pritchard Hill's complex rocky soils and magnificent views. They are passionate about preserving the land by using sustainable farming techniques and continuing what their parents started: making extraordinary wines that express the distinctiveness of Pritchard Hill. Bluish-purple in the glass. Very much a viney nose. Very pleasant on the tongue. Some blackberry/blueberry fruit flavors. Sturdy tannin, but not like many others (e.g., Spring Mountain AVA). US$44.99 at Total Wine in 2013.

Good medium ruby-red. Inviting aromas of cassis, dark chocolate, mocha, licorice, tobacco and loam. Supple on entry, then ripe, suave and concentrated, with harmonious acidity framing the youthful currant, mocha and menthol flavors. A bit less giving today than the nose suggests but nicely sweet and sharply delineated. The firmly tannic, lively finish is a bit youthfully tough and in need of patience, but this cabernet offers outstanding potential. - Stephen Tanzer 92+ Points The 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Signature is a dark, mysterious beauty endowed with considerable depth and richness. Mocha, chocolate, spices and plums fuse together gracefully as this soft, supple wine takes shape in the glass. I very much like the immediacy of the 2010. Only a little bit of persistence is missing on the finish, but not enough to materially detract from what is a gorgeous bottle of wine. For Napa Valley standards, this is about as good as it gets for the money. The blend...
