Chappellet Estate Chardonnay 2012
Chappellet 2012 Chardonnay ''Estate'' is 100% Chardonnay from select, elite vineyards in the Napa Valley aged eight months in French oak barrels (one-third new). This California white offers concentrated, layered aromas of fresh fruit, clove, nutmeg, vanilla and toast on the nose. On the palate, fresh flavors of peach and citrus fruit, creme fraiche and quince with great defnition and texture, lively acidity and a long finish.
This is a bit difficult for me because I like this winery, very much, and I have enjoyed multiple vintages of their chardonnay in the past. That being said, this one is very heavily oak and, to my way of thinking, carries the buttery characteristic much too far. I guess I am showing another of my prejudices when I report that it lacks acid to give it the refreshing quality that I seek in white wines. All that being said, I can’t say that there are any faults in this wine. I’m pretty much neutral about it.
