Chappellet Chardonnay Napa Valley Signature 2013

External Review:

Full ruby-red. Aromas of currant, tobacco, graphite and crushed rock. Sweet, plush and nicely deep, with a silky texture to the flavors of plum, currant and spicecake. Quite sweet, even a bit exotic, for this bottling. Finishes with substantial broad, dusty tannins and plenty of spicy, chocolatey oak.

The Chappellets’ romance with Pritchard Hill started when Donn and Molly Chappellet first glimpsed its spectacular vistas. Perched 1,200 feet above the floor of the Napa Valley, the atmosphere at the Chappellet family's winery and Pritchard Hill estate vineyards is serene and peaceful. You can't help but fall in love with the breathtaking views and the gentle mountain Donn and Molly Chappellet made their home. The Chappellet family has been crafting world class wines from their Pritchard Hill estate vineyards since 1967. Spurred by the notion that Bacchus loves the hills and that mountain fruit would make superior wine, Chappellet followed the advice of legendary winemaker André Tchelistcheff and settled on the rocky eastern slopes of the Napa Valley. The Chappellets were the first to plant vineyards exclusively on high elevation hillsides and the second winery to be established in the Napa Valley after Prohibition. The foundation of Chappellet winemaking program is focused on creating extraordinary age-worthy Cabernet Sauvignon that expresses the unique characteristics of the fruit from Pritchard Hill. The rugged terroir of Chappellet's vineyards produces wines with great intensity and depth, qualities that define the world's finest wines. For four decades Chappellet wines have received high praise from wine critics and have been sought after by the world's premier collectors. Today the six Chappellet children share their parents’ romance with Pritchard Hill's complex rocky soils and magnificent views. They are passionate about preserving the land by using sustainable farming techniques and continuing what their parents started: making extraordinary wines that express the distinctiveness of Pritchard Hill. A young, tight, closed mountain Cabernet that should follow a graceful aging curve. Pours inky dark, giving off muted aromas of oak, forest floor and wild blackberries. Dense and tannic now, with rich fruit just waiting to emerge. This clasically proportioned wine should begin to be drinkable after 2010.

Very tightly wound, firm and taut, rich and full-bodied, offering intense mineral, blackberry, plum and currant fruit, with hints of flowers and sage. Ends with gripping tannins, but on the finish the flavors slowly unwind and expand. Needs time. Decant. Best from 2011 through 2020.

Deftly balanced, striking a tasty mix of ripe blackberry, black cherry and currant, and smooth, toasty vanilla scented oak. Sharply focused, with each sip revealing an added flavor dimension, finishing with supple, well-integrated tannins. A solid effort from a winery that's definitely on the rebound. Drink now through 2010.

Well-balanced, rich and flavorful, with lavender, currant and dill aromas and earthy currant, herb, sage and cedar flavors. Finishes with firm, chewy tannins. A solid effort that needs short-term cellaring. Best from 2004 through 2012.

A bold and delicious cabernet grown on the dry, rocky soils of Pritchard Hill, this packs the fruit intensity of fresh blackberries into plenty of alcohol. The lasting impression is a vein of mineral tannins that will need years to mellow; the richness of the fruit seems more than capable of outlasting them.
