Chappellet Chardonnay Napa Valley 2015

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

This shows a lot of ripe apple, pear and green plum fruit on the nose but with an underlay of earth, steel, and gentle suggestions of green herb and vanilla bean. A bit sweet on the attack, this shows more wood on the palate than the aromatic suggest, and while the fruit is lovely, ripe and round succulent white orchard fruit with a peachy glow, with great richness, the alcohol seems to stick out a bit. Texturally this does a nice job of blending the creamy, oak rounded style with freshness, and the finish shows great length and vibrancy with wonderfully integrated spice tones, but I do get snagged on the alcohol again on the final. A minor failing. 90pts

The Chappellets’ romance with Pritchard Hill started when Donn and Molly Chappellet first glimpsed its spectacular vistas. Perched 1,200 feet above the floor of the Napa Valley, the atmosphere at the Chappellet family's winery and Pritchard Hill estate vineyards is serene and peaceful. You can't help but fall in love with the breathtaking views and the gentle mountain Donn and Molly Chappellet made their home. The Chappellet family has been crafting world class wines from their Pritchard Hill estate vineyards since 1967. Spurred by the notion that Bacchus loves the hills and that mountain fruit would make superior wine, Chappellet followed the advice of legendary winemaker André Tchelistcheff and settled on the rocky eastern slopes of the Napa Valley. The Chappellets were the first to plant vineyards exclusively on high elevation hillsides and the second winery to be established in the Napa Valley after Prohibition. The foundation of Chappellet winemaking program is focused on creating extraordinary age-worthy Cabernet Sauvignon that expresses the unique characteristics of the fruit from Pritchard Hill. The rugged terroir of Chappellet's vineyards produces wines with great intensity and depth, qualities that define the world's finest wines. For four decades Chappellet wines have received high praise from wine critics and have been sought after by the world's premier collectors. Today the six Chappellet children share their parents’ romance with Pritchard Hill's complex rocky soils and magnificent views. They are passionate about preserving the land by using sustainable farming techniques and continuing what their parents started: making extraordinary wines that express the distinctiveness of Pritchard Hill. Very big nose with flowery, and fruit hits. A Big wine for a Napa Valley Chardonnay--more oaky vanilla or ML butter than I normally like. Also, not as acidic as I normally like. The best part is how it fills the mouth with flavor. This is going to go well with tonights roasted chicken. US$24.99 at Wine Club in Santa Ana

Nose of blackberry an some hints of blueberry. Concentrated red and black fruits with hints of herbs and spices. Roasted coffee and chocolate tones. Rich tannins provide great structure. - Tasted at winery 12/30/10

Nice cab. Dark fruit, cassis. Integrated oak. Great for the price. Held up well next to the Ramey at 1/2 the price

Drank along with the 03 Ramey CS DM, the Ramey was clearly the better wine. But the Chappellet showed nice concentration and fruit for the price. Not a long term ager, but drinking well now for $25

woody lacked the signature profile of concentrated dark fruit. Good structure The wine held together over 3 days of sitting out. Had high hopes, but unfulfilled.

THE WINE: Our Napa Valley Chardonnay is made using fruit grown on elite vineyards in some of the coolest regions of Napa Valley. The majority of the grapes come from Kelly Ranch, which overlooks the San Pablo Bay, where marine influences and shallow soils composed of clay and gravel create optimal growing conditions for Chardonnay. To add depth and complexity, the 2015 vintage also includes grapes from Red Hen Vineyard in Oak Knoll, and from an older, dry-farmed block of Wente clone grapes from Bald Mountain Vineyard, which is located at an elevation of 2,000 feet on Mount Veeder. This wine was aged on its lees for eight months in one-third new French oak barrels. For added texture and viscosity, a significant portion of the wine underwent malolactic fermentation. GROWING SEASON AND HARVEST: While the 2015 growing season delivered grapes of exceptional quality, it was a vintage that was light on quantity. With another warm, dry spring, the season got off to a fast start. Unfortunately, cold weather during flowering resulted in a significant amount of shatter, resulting in light clusters. Knowing that yields would be down, we tailored our farming to ensure that we brought out the very best from the small crop. This included methods designed to create homogenous ripening, as well as techniques that limited canopy growth, while providing ideal dappled sunlight on the fruit. A lovely temperate summer allowed the grapes to ripen slowly, and everything was picked at the perfect stage of development, with pristine grapes showing beautiful color, density and depth. TASTING NOTES: This wine begins with a lovely nose offering layers of orange blossom, lemon zest, apricot, lychee, fresh cream and nutmeg. While the palate is rich and silky, excellent acidity keeps the flavors poised and bright. Notes of lemon curd, peach, brioche, smoke and spice carry through to a lingering finish. Growing Season & Harvest: 2013 was one of the most idyllic growing seasons we have seen in many years, with picture-perfect weather from spring through harvest. ough late-2012 rains provided enough water to ensure adequate soil moisture, drought-like conditions throughout the 2013 growing season limited vine vigor and allowed us to further ne-tune our viticultural techniques. With temperatures that were neither too hot, nor too cold, we achieved ideal ripeness, while still preserving excellent natural acidity. With no threat of rain or heat events near harvest, we were able to pick all of our fruit precisely when we wished. - Winery TA: .58 g/100 ml pH: 3.51 Alcohol: 14.5%

This effort is similar to Chappellet s past vintages with citrus and tropical fruit flavors tastefully accented by oak and brightened with a squeeze of lemony acidity. - S.H. Wine Enthusiast.

Rating: 90/100 - As reviewed by Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine (www.cgcw.com) in the October 2010 issue. Steely and lean at first pass, then opening up slowly as it reveals bright aromas of apples, Pippin at first then a light touch of ripe Gala, filled in quietly but attractively by a dollop of creamy oak richness. Still, the fullness and depth of fruit on the palate comes as a bit of a pleasant surprise and lifts the wine into the highly recommended range. It can fully reward present drinking, but it also has the nerve and depth to develop in the bottle for at least two to four more years.Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine aging recommendation: Drinkable now. Further bottle aging can improve this wine.
