Chappellet Chardonnay Napa 2009

Winemaker's Notes:

Chappellet's Napa Valley Chardonnay is produced from fruit grown in the coolest regions of Napa Valley. Overlooking the San Pablo Bay, Kelly Ranch receives the benefits of the Bay's marine influences, creating optimal growing conditions for Chardonnay. Shallow soils composed of clay and gravel support low vigor vines with yields of only 2.5 tons per acre. The wine was aged on its lees for eight months in one-third new French oak barrels. For added texture and viscosity, a majority of the wine underwent malolactic fermentation. Not yet reviewed; 2008 vintage rated 91 points by Wine Spectator.

The Chappellets’ romance with Pritchard Hill started when Donn and Molly Chappellet first glimpsed its spectacular vistas. Perched 1,200 feet above the floor of the Napa Valley, the atmosphere at the Chappellet family's winery and Pritchard Hill estate vineyards is serene and peaceful. You can't help but fall in love with the breathtaking views and the gentle mountain Donn and Molly Chappellet made their home. The Chappellet family has been crafting world class wines from their Pritchard Hill estate vineyards since 1967. Spurred by the notion that Bacchus loves the hills and that mountain fruit would make superior wine, Chappellet followed the advice of legendary winemaker André Tchelistcheff and settled on the rocky eastern slopes of the Napa Valley. The Chappellets were the first to plant vineyards exclusively on high elevation hillsides and the second winery to be established in the Napa Valley after Prohibition. The foundation of Chappellet winemaking program is focused on creating extraordinary age-worthy Cabernet Sauvignon that expresses the unique characteristics of the fruit from Pritchard Hill. The rugged terroir of Chappellet's vineyards produces wines with great intensity and depth, qualities that define the world's finest wines. For four decades Chappellet wines have received high praise from wine critics and have been sought after by the world's premier collectors. Today the six Chappellet children share their parents’ romance with Pritchard Hill's complex rocky soils and magnificent views. They are passionate about preserving the land by using sustainable farming techniques and continuing what their parents started: making extraordinary wines that express the distinctiveness of Pritchard Hill. Dense and oaky at first with buttery notes and a deep whiff of coconut which integrates with air, allowing the pure core of simple yet intense black cherry and mineral fruit to emerge with time. Starting off a bit hollow, this fills in in the glass, showing freshly crushed black currant and black cherry fruit supported by earthy and medicinal flavors. The wood is present but well-judged and lessing in impact over the course of the evening. Not the best wine tonight but the wine with the best potential for improvement in the cellar. Give this three to five years and it should show quite well. 91pts

Light nail polish notes initially on the nose. Then, anise and cassis. Primary flavors of blackberry and cherry jam. Fair oak, big alcohol right now as well as strong acid and tannin. This will age it nicely, but it's pretty big up front. Decant. Very dry. Currant and creme de cassis throughout the palate. Rich and powerful cab. 91 pts. 7/7/12

Pretty straw color in the glass. Light vanilla nose. Very nice drinking wine. Table grapes flavor. Would be nicer if it had a tad mor= acid, but, you know, that's the way I am. Not a big oaky chard, but it went nicely with our grilled ahi tuni... US$24.99 at Total Wine.

The depth and complexity that mark the spectacular 2009 growing season are fully on display in this wine, with head-turning aromatics of black currant, cherry, plum and violet leaping out of the glass before revealing subtler notes of cinnamon, clove, espresso, cocoa and anise. On the palate, the tannins are large, yet velvety, supporting voluptuous layers of blackberry, bing cherry, cassis and baking spices. Oak-inspired notes of caramelized brown sugar and molasses add additional nuance, while leading to a plush, lingering finish. - WineryWINE STATISTICSGrapes:Cabernet Sauvignon 76%Malbec 11%Merlot 9%Petit Verdot 4%September 14 through October 12, 2009 25-28.6 ° Brix at HarvestAlcohol- 14.9 % TA- 0.59 g/100 mlpH- 3.76Bottled on July 22, 2011 ** Only 3 in Stock **

It is a benchmark for the long-lived hillside wines of the Napa Valley; full of structure and aging potential, yet seductively forward in its concentrated varietal character. The dry, rocky soils of Pritchard Hill produce small, intensely flavorful grapes.

The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Signature is another striking wine. The 2009 doesn’t have the bombastic fruit of the 2010, instead, it stands out for the silkiness of its tannin and pure length. The 2009 Signature is classy and refined from the very first taste. All the elements are beautifully in place in this mid-weight Cabernet. The 2009 is 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Malbec, 9% Merlot and 4% Petit Verdot. Anticipated maturity: 2017–2029.

Inviting aromas of apple fruit and lusty, appealing buttery, toasty oak. Handsome blend of apple, peach, pear and vanilla flavors on the well-rounded palate. Finish displays an engaging perfume with spicy accents.
