Chappellet Cervantes Mtn Cuv10 2010

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

The nose delivers an early blast of crushed fresh herbs, black currant fruit and very well-judged oak. Well-balanced and nearly seamless in the mouth with a slightly polished feel. The tannins are here but the almost gauzy blanket of black berry and plum fruit manages to conceal them right through until the finish. Even on the finish there is a sweetness to these tannins, an attractive gentleness that keeps them from detracting from the light, gently herbal and earthy core of lingering black fruit. Fairly large scaled yet elegant, this has the balance to age well beyond it's price point but is attractive today for it's fine, understated style. 89pts

The Chappellets’ romance with Pritchard Hill started when Donn and Molly Chappellet first glimpsed its spectacular vistas. Perched 1,200 feet above the floor of the Napa Valley, the atmosphere at the Chappellet family's winery and Pritchard Hill estate vineyards is serene and peaceful. You can't help but fall in love with the breathtaking views and the gentle mountain Donn and Molly Chappellet made their home. The Chappellet family has been crafting world class wines from their Pritchard Hill estate vineyards since 1967. Spurred by the notion that Bacchus loves the hills and that mountain fruit would make superior wine, Chappellet followed the advice of legendary winemaker André Tchelistcheff and settled on the rocky eastern slopes of the Napa Valley. The Chappellets were the first to plant vineyards exclusively on high elevation hillsides and the second winery to be established in the Napa Valley after Prohibition. The foundation of Chappellet winemaking program is focused on creating extraordinary age-worthy Cabernet Sauvignon that expresses the unique characteristics of the fruit from Pritchard Hill. The rugged terroir of Chappellet's vineyards produces wines with great intensity and depth, qualities that define the world's finest wines. For four decades Chappellet wines have received high praise from wine critics and have been sought after by the world's premier collectors. Today the six Chappellet children share their parents’ romance with Pritchard Hill's complex rocky soils and magnificent views. They are passionate about preserving the land by using sustainable farming techniques and continuing what their parents started: making extraordinary wines that express the distinctiveness of Pritchard Hill. On the palate, abundant black cherry and cola flavors are supported by soft, rich tannins and a supple texture that leads to a long, satisfying finish.

Chappellet Mountain Cuvee is called Cervantes in the 2010 vintage, however it stays true to the previous blends - a core of Cabernet with a significant amount of Merlot with a bit of Petit Verdot and Malbec rounding out the blend.

This effort is similar to Chappellet s past vintages with citrus and tropical fruit flavors tastefully accented by oak and brightened with a squeeze of lemony acidity. - S.H. Wine Enthusiast.

Chappellet Vineyards in the Prichard Hill region of Napa Valley is legendary for it's outstanding Cab-based wines. And their Mountain Cuvee was always the red red blend made to be drunk while waiting for the big boys to come around. Now called Mountain Cuvee Cervantes, it's a winemaker's blend that beautifully expresses the distinctive qualities of the traditional Bordeaux varietals, and is crafted for early consumption. Each component making up the cuvee contributes nuances that mingle with and complement each other. The result is a complex array of aromas and flavors that deliver pure pleasure in a glass. This 2010 is a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 9% Petit Verdot and 6% Malbec. It show distinctive black currant and dark chocolate notes that linger.
