The Chappellets’ romance with Pritchard Hill started when Donn and Molly Chappellet first glimpsed its spectacular vistas. Perched 1,200 feet above the floor of the Napa Valley, the atmosphere at the Chappellet family's winery and Pritchard Hill estate vineyards is serene and peaceful. You can't help but fall in love with the breathtaking views and the gentle mountain Donn and Molly Chappellet made their home. The Chappellet family has been crafting world class wines from their Pritchard Hill estate vineyards since 1967. Spurred by the notion that Bacchus loves the hills and that mountain fruit would make superior wine, Chappellet followed the advice of legendary winemaker André Tchelistcheff and settled on the rocky eastern slopes of the Napa Valley. The Chappellets were the first to plant vineyards exclusively on high elevation hillsides and the second winery to be established in the Napa Valley after Prohibition. The foundation of Chappellet winemaking program is focused on creating extraordinary age-worthy Cabernet Sauvignon that expresses the unique characteristics of the fruit from Pritchard Hill. The rugged terroir of Chappellet's vineyards produces wines with great intensity and depth, qualities that define the world's finest wines. For four decades Chappellet wines have received high praise from wine critics and have been sought after by the world's premier collectors. Today the six Chappellet children share their parents’ romance with Pritchard Hill's complex rocky soils and magnificent views. They are passionate about preserving the land by using sustainable farming techniques and continuing what their parents started: making extraordinary wines that express the distinctiveness of Pritchard Hill. Nose of dark fruit. Flsavors of unsweet currant and blueberry on the tongue. Then unsweetened chocolate. Licorice. Still some serious tannins may exaggerate those impressions.

What a brute. Big oak. Lots of tannin. Some blueberry/black fruit, but not a lot. Lots of wood textures—cigar box/tobacco. I’m looking for raw meat to go with this one. There is no denying, though, that this is a cab lover’s cab. I’m saying that this one will take years to calm down. Whether it will achieve the elegance of a great Bordeaux is unclear to me, but it could be a great ride.

The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Donn Chappellet Signature possesses a dense ruby/purple color, beautiful blueberry and blackberry fruit, and great elegance allied to considerable richness and power. Complex and satisfying with plush fruits of black cherry and nuances of espresso and bittersweet chocolate. A great match with short ribs, veal dishes and hard cheese.

Opening with expressive notes of blackberry, cherry and cassis, this wine is full-bodied and rich. Hints of chocolate and espresso layer with spicy oak for added complexity. Smooth tannins infused with ripe sweet fruit create a lush, supple texture. Rich waves of berry, spice and herbs create a lasting impression of finesse and structure in this Cabernet.

A classy and classic Napa Cabernet, dark-colored, with rich blackberry, black licorice, cedar, tobacco and dusty, loamy earth notes. The brightness and density of the red and dark berry fruit gives this an immediate and alluring charm. Ends with gutsy, chewy tannins. Drink now through 2030. 11,200 cases made.

The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Signature is fabulous. Dark red cherries, plums, smoke, savory herbs and wild flowers race across the palate in a bright, aromatically lifted Cabernet Sauvignon endowed with gorgeous precision and nuance. Distinctly ferrous and savory notes add nuance to the radiant, generous 2012 fruit. Dollops of Merlot, Petit Verdot and Malbec round out the blend. The Cabernet Sauvignon is partly made from purchased fruit. It is also one of the very best wines readers will find in its price range.

Vintage: 2010 12/12/2014

For more than four decades, the Chappellet family has been crafting world-class wines from fruit cultivated on the steep, rocky slopes of Napa Valley's renowned Pritchard Hill. As one of the first wineries to pioneer high-elevation hillside planting, and one of the few remaining great family-owned Napa Valley wineries, Chappellet Vineyard and Winery has influenced generations of vintners. Throughout its history, Chappellet has also established an enduring legacy as one of California's most acclaimed producers of Cabernet Sauvignon. This, their Signature Cab has gotten rave reviews from the critics including Antonio Galloni who scored it 92 saying "The 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Signature is a dark, mysterious beauty endowed with considerable depth and richness. Mocha, chocolate, spices and plums fuse together gracefully as this soft, supple wine takes shape in the glass. I very much like the immediacy of the 2010. Only a little bit of persistence is missing on the finish, but not enough to materially detract from what is a gorgeous bottle of wine. For Napa Valley standards, this is about as good as it gets for the money. The blend is 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot, 7% Malbec and 4% Petit Verdot. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2025."
