Chappellet Cabernet Sauvignon Pritchard Hill Estate Vineyard Napa Valley 2014

Member Review by Matt Walker:

Reserved at first, highly structured and nuanced, lavender, vanilla and ripe plums on the nose. Fine but substantial tannins and wonderful balance. Superb, with great aging potential

The Chappellets’ romance with Pritchard Hill started when Donn and Molly Chappellet first glimpsed its spectacular vistas. Perched 1,200 feet above the floor of the Napa Valley, the atmosphere at the Chappellet family's winery and Pritchard Hill estate vineyards is serene and peaceful. You can't help but fall in love with the breathtaking views and the gentle mountain Donn and Molly Chappellet made their home. The Chappellet family has been crafting world class wines from their Pritchard Hill estate vineyards since 1967. Spurred by the notion that Bacchus loves the hills and that mountain fruit would make superior wine, Chappellet followed the advice of legendary winemaker André Tchelistcheff and settled on the rocky eastern slopes of the Napa Valley. The Chappellets were the first to plant vineyards exclusively on high elevation hillsides and the second winery to be established in the Napa Valley after Prohibition. The foundation of Chappellet winemaking program is focused on creating extraordinary age-worthy Cabernet Sauvignon that expresses the unique characteristics of the fruit from Pritchard Hill. The rugged terroir of Chappellet's vineyards produces wines with great intensity and depth, qualities that define the world's finest wines. For four decades Chappellet wines have received high praise from wine critics and have been sought after by the world's premier collectors. Today the six Chappellet children share their parents’ romance with Pritchard Hill's complex rocky soils and magnificent views. They are passionate about preserving the land by using sustainable farming techniques and continuing what their parents started: making extraordinary wines that express the distinctiveness of Pritchard Hill. Tight nose up front. Black cherry and violet with plum, cocoa and herbs. Tremendous depth on this wine. Seductive ripeness and very rich. Delicious. - Tasted at winery 12/30/10

Nuanced and powerful aroma, with oak, vanilla, dark fruits, and spices. The mouth is dry and smooth, sits perfectly well on the aftertaste.

Grilled herbs, cedar, spices and pencil shavings emerge as the 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Pritchard Hill sits in the glass. There is a wonderful immediacy to the 2010 that is totally compelling. A wine that conquers the soul and intellect, Chappellet’s 2010 Pritchard Hill is a wonderful introduction to the wines of these hillside vineyards in St. Helena. As good as the 2010 is today, my sense is that the wine will be even better in another few years. The 2010 is 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Malbec and 10% Petit Verdot. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2030. - R obert Parker 95 Points (15.1% alcohol): Bright medium ruby. Aromas of blackberry, black cherry, licorice, dark chocolate, mocha and sexy oak show an almost porty ripeness. Dense, broad, lush and sweet, with highly concentrated black raspberry, mineral, mocha and licorice flavors lifted by a violet topnote. Finishes with impressive mounting length and big, dusty but sweet oak-driven tannins. In a rather full-blown style for the year, but I'm not complaining. - Stephen Tanzer 93 Points Shows a potent edge of pencil lead and shavings to its firm dried berry, sage and savory notes. Young and tight, but persistent, gaining depth and firmness on the finish. Best from 2014 through 2024. 1,291 cases made. –JL - Wine Spectator Magazine 92 Points ** Only 1 in Stock **

Vintage: 2009 01/03/2013

Dense, tannic and rustic red, sharing traits of many muscle-bound Napa Cabernets from the vintage. Requires chewing through extracted dark berry, cedar, roasted herb, woodsy oak, forest floor and crushed rock flavors. Ends with a touch of black licor... Wine Spectator. A Cabernet Sauvignon wine from California in USA. 2009 Chappellet Cabernet Sauvignon Pritchard Hill 750ml
