The Chappellets’ romance with Pritchard Hill started when Donn and Molly Chappellet first glimpsed its spectacular vistas. Perched 1,200 feet above the floor of the Napa Valley, the atmosphere at the Chappellet family's winery and Pritchard Hill estate vineyards is serene and peaceful. You can't help but fall in love with the breathtaking views and the gentle mountain Donn and Molly Chappellet made their home. The Chappellet family has been crafting world class wines from their Pritchard Hill estate vineyards since 1967. Spurred by the notion that Bacchus loves the hills and that mountain fruit would make superior wine, Chappellet followed the advice of legendary winemaker André Tchelistcheff and settled on the rocky eastern slopes of the Napa Valley. The Chappellets were the first to plant vineyards exclusively on high elevation hillsides and the second winery to be established in the Napa Valley after Prohibition. The foundation of Chappellet winemaking program is focused on creating extraordinary age-worthy Cabernet Sauvignon that expresses the unique characteristics of the fruit from Pritchard Hill. The rugged terroir of Chappellet's vineyards produces wines with great intensity and depth, qualities that define the world's finest wines. For four decades Chappellet wines have received high praise from wine critics and have been sought after by the world's premier collectors. Today the six Chappellet children share their parents’ romance with Pritchard Hill's complex rocky soils and magnificent views. They are passionate about preserving the land by using sustainable farming techniques and continuing what their parents started: making extraordinary wines that express the distinctiveness of Pritchard Hill. Black fruit that's a little inky, violet dominates the slightly herbal nose which shows a little licorice with hints of red fruit but big grilled meat and black pepper top notes. This is lightly tight on entry with early milky chocolate notes followed by bright, fine grained tannins, mineral notes, smoking wood notes and jammy blackberry fruit. There's nice tension on the palate, some pleasant fruit layered over a rather tightly knit structure,. This is still a touch short on the finish but the lean, rugged feel here, showing fat, power and finesse bodes well for positive development in the bottle. 92pts

Bluish-purple in the glass. Very much a viney nose. Very pleasant on the tongue. Some blackberry/blueberry fruit flavors. Sturdy tannin, but not like many others (e.g., Spring Mountain AVA). US$44.99 at Total Wine in 2013.

[$35] creamy; on the palate peach, apricot, citrus, vanilla, nutty; not a huge fan though the others liked it

Wow, very enjoyable example of Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon with a few years of age on it. Excellent modulation and integration of fruit, tannin and acid in which none dominate while each makes its own contribution to the total taste experience. Something of a funky nose happily does not reveal itself under the palate.

The Wine: The Signature Cabernet Sauvignon has been our flagship wine for more than three decades. It is a benchmark for the long-lived hillside wines of the Napa Valley; full of structure and aging potential, yet seductively forward in its varietal character. The dry, rocky soils of Pritchard Hill produce small, intensely flavorful grapes. Crop thinning allows for full, even ripening and further elevates flavor complexity. Growing Season & Harvest: While the 2015 growing season delivered grapes of exceptional quality, it was a vintage that was light on quantity. With another warm, dry spring, the growing season got off to a fast start. This was followed by cold weather during flowering that resulted in light clusters. Knowing that yields would be down, we tailored our farming to ensure that we brought out the very best from the small crop. This included methods designed to create homogenous ripening, as well as techniques that limited canopy growth, while providing ideal dappled sunlight on the ripening fruit. A lovely temperate summer allowed the grapes to ripen slowly, while an unhurried harvest ensured that everything was picked at the perfect stage of development, with pristine grapes showing beautiful color, density and depth. Tasting Notes: Deep, rich and beautifully structured, this is a classic expression of hillside Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, offering alluring aromas of blackberry, cassis and chocolate, along with hints of espresso, anise and fragrant herbs. On the palate, creamy oak and concentrated berry and black cherry flavors are underscored by velvety tannins and subtle notes of cola, clove and black licorice. For more than four decades, the Chappellet family has been crafting world-class wines from fruit cultivated on the steep, rocky slopes of Napa Valley's renowned Pritchard Hill. As one of the first wineries to pioneer high-elevation hillside planting, and one of the few remaining great family-owned Napa Valley wineries, Chappellet Vineyard and Winery has influenced generations of vintners. Throughout its history, Chappellet has also established an enduring legacy as one of California's most acclaimed producers of Cabernet Sauvignon. This 2014 is a blend of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Petit Verdot, 6% Malbec, 5% Cabernet Franc and 4% Merlot. Antonio Galloni scored this 93 saying "The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Signature is fabulous. A host of graphite, smoke, licorice, lavender, crème de cassis and exotic spice give the wine its characteristic savory and mineral-drenched flavors. Medium in body and exquisitely layered in the glass, the Signature is a real head-turner. Best of all, it is a superb value. And I do mean superb." and Robert Parker scored this 94+ saying "The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon, a blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9/% Petit Verdot and the rest Malbec, Cabernet Franc and Merlot, is a classic example of Pritchard Hill, Chappellet and of Napa Valley. Brilliant purity, a dense purple color, superb blackberry and floral-infused blueberry fruit and cassis, a full-bodied mouthfeel, moderate but sweet tannin and a long, layered, texture and finish make for a profound Cabernet Sauvignon that actually sells at a bargain price for what is in the bottle. Moreover, look for it to evolve graciously for another 20+ years." James Suckling gave it 94 points saying "Aromas of blackcurrants, blackberries, mushrooms and spices. Full and very intense with lots of fruit. Firm and silky. Plenty of tension. Layered and intense."

Robert Parker scored this 96 points saying "The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Signature from Chappellet, a blend of 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Malbec and the rest Merlot and Petit Verdot, is a stunner. Moreover, it’s a pretty realistic value for a top-notch Cabernet from California. Of course, it’s a great vintage and they’ve nailed it. Deep ruby/purple color, notes of blueberry, blackberry, with cassis, camphor and spring flowers, the wine is full-bodied, powerful (14.8% natural alcohol), layered with supple tannins and a long, long finish. This wine can be drunk now, or cellared for 25 or more years."

Opening with expressive notes of blackberry, cherry and cassis, this wine is full-bodied and rich. Hints of chocolate and espresso layer with spicy oak for added complexity. Smooth tannins infused with ripe sweet fruit create a lush, supple texture. Rich waves of berry, spice and herbs create a lasting impression of finesse and structure in this Cabernet.
