What to Expect

Coming from a Granite hillside in the north of France's Rhone Valley, Hermitage is one of the world's greatest expressions of the Syrah grape. Blessed with a full southern exposition, the hill of Hermitage allows the vines to fully ripen, yet its poor soils stress the vines, reducing yields and ensuring a remarkable complexity in the finished wines. The wines tend to be medium to medium-full bodied with bright acidity and velvety tannins that are enmeshed in slightly gamey, olive scented fruit that recalls black raspberries and boysenberries.

The 1996 Crozes-Hermitage Les Meysonniers reveals evidence of aging in toasty oak. Having enjoyed six weeks of maceration, the wine is dense purple colored, and fuller bodied, with sweeter, more expansive, spicy, olive-scented and flavored cassis fruit. It possesses the vintages tell-tale acidity, which should serve to keep it fresh and lively.
