What to Expect

Coming from a Granite hillside in the north of France's Rhone Valley, Hermitage is one of the world's greatest expressions of the Syrah grape. Blessed with a full southern exposition, the hill of Hermitage allows the vines to fully ripen, yet its poor soils stress the vines, reducing yields and ensuring a remarkable complexity in the finished wines. The wines tend to be medium to medium-full bodied with bright acidity and velvety tannins that are enmeshed in slightly gamey, olive scented fruit that recalls black raspberries and boysenberries.

Winemakers Notes

Grape variety
Syrah.

Soil
Our Hermitage « Monier de la Sizeranne » grows on different types of soil, from West to East : - « les Bessards » : Granite origin. It forms the "soul" of a good Hermitage wine - « le Méal » : Old alluvial terrace, with a lot of gravels and rolled pebbles, more or less chalky - « les Greffieux » : Limon with rolled stones.

Harvesting
Hand harvesting at optimal maturity.

Matching food with wines
Venison fillet in red wine sauce. Beef rosted. Mature "Saint Félicien" cheese.

Reviews

IWC 91+ (2/2001): Full medium ruby. Slightly reduced but flamboyantly pungent aromas of raspberry, cassis, cassis leaf, minerals and Cuban tobacco. Fat and dense but quite penetrating, with its fresh dark berry flavors complicated by the peppery, slightly green character of very young syrah. Tannins are a bit tough, in the style of the vintage, but hit the palate late. More sauvage and perhaps more complex than the relatively refined '99.

Wine Skinny

Incredible collector quality wine, this is an intense, seriously structured wine. Focused blackberry fruit is interwoven with nuances of earth, mineral, toasted oak, tobacco, and spice. Firm tannins and a fantastic finish. Really good now, but should really age for about five years -- then it will drink well for the next ten or fifteen years, at least.

Color: Deep garnet red, with purple highlights. Nose: Red fruit (raspberry, blackcurrant), with a hint of liquorice. Mouth: Good attack, it is a round, elegant wine, soft and concentrated tannins, and a long aftertaste of blackcurrant and raspberry, spicy when it is young.

WA 91 (2/2001): One of the strongest efforts Chapoutier has produced from Hermitage is the 1998 Ermitage La Sizeranne, which is performing even better from bottle than it was last year from cask. It offers up an earthy, smoky, sweet black currant-scented nose, followed by big, chewy, full-bodied flavors, excellent texture, and an intriguing liquid mineral nuance to the deep, sweet, ripe flavors. This wine was made from small yields of 15 hectoliters per hectare, and aged in 50% new oak casks. The crop size was 40% less than normal. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2025.
