Chapoutier Chateauneuf du Pape Barbe Rac Proprietary Blend Wine 2012

External Review by JJ Buckley Fine Wines:

Full ruby. Deeper and more brooding than the Croix de Bois. Displays intense dark berry cherry anise and black cardamom scents along with notes of dried flowers and smoky minerals. Powerful but lively as well offering gently sweet black raspberry and cherry flavors and a touch of orange pith. Finishes smooth broad and long with building spiciness and excellent clarity. Stephen Tanzers IWC.

M. Chapoutier:
The name CHAPOUTIER is present in the Rhône Valley since 1808. In 1879, the distant ancestor Polydor CHAPOUTIER was the first to begin to buy vines, thus moving from the status of wine-grower of an estate to that of a viticulturist, a wine producer and a businessman. The pioneering spirit was already present in the family.

Deeper and richer with additional minerality the 2012 Chateauneuf du Pape Barbe Rac (100% Grenache) is a brilliant looking tank sample. Loaded with mineral-laced black cherry black currants spice-box licorice and crushed flowers it hits the palate with a full-bodied structured profile that will benefit from short-term cellaring. It should be one of the longer lived wines in the vintage and have 15 years or more of overall longevity. Drink 2016-2027.

Four hectares of vines planted in 1901 and 1902. Dark crimson and briary. Masses of tannin on the end. Sweet spicy fruit. Much much more youthful than the Croix de Bois. Almost grating tannins at the moment. 17/20 Jancis Robinson.
